New P5K doesn't Post

Asus P5K
E8400 intel CPU
2 GB 6400 ram (compatible according to both the manual and Asus' ram checker)
Antec Sontana III case (500w power)

Asus P5K motherboard (1.02g motherboard version so should work with a 45nm processor)
E8400 CPU
BFG 9800 GT video card
Corsair 6400 800mhz ram
Antec Sontana III case (with 500 PSU)

When I have everything connected and power on, nothing happens, the cpu fan goes as if it was about to spin but then just stops without doing anything but slight movement.

If I remove the Ram, same as the above - no Bios Beeps

If I remove the video card then the fans spin up, but I get a continuous high pitched tone as well as the 1 long, 3 short for a fault with the video.

Yes the 2x2 is connected as well as the main supply to the board, have reset Cmos, tried running it outside the case to eliminate chance of a short, changed ram slots.

Processor+Ram+Video Card=nothing
Processor+Video Card=Nothing
Processor with no ram/video card=beeps for no video, fan spins
Processor with ram, no video card=beeps for no video, fan spins.

This is my first build so I'm more than a little out of my depth on what it could be as well as irritated as I'm sure I installed everything properly.

Welcome to O/C Forums

You might need to update the bios on the board. You'll need an older 775 chip to flash the bios.

According to everything I've found, p5k revision 1.02g should run Wolfdale processors out of the box.

Secondly the bios doesn't account for the fans not working when the video card is installed but working when they're not.

Lastly the posts from people who had to update their bios suggest that their machines spun up and didn't post. Mine isn't spinning up at all.

Well you've tested evrything, you've done pretty much evrything diagnostic, and you say " According to everything I've found, p5k revision 1.02g should run Wolfdale processors out of the box" so after all this i'm afraid you already know what's left. Your board seems to be fubared. You might want to return it for an exchange.

Another thing to consider is other ppl with the same board have the same, more or less, problems. I would suggest getting a different board with a lower death rate.

Seems there are a lot of problems with the P5K, I bought one in Dec had to return it to ASUS for repair, they sent me a brand new one.

I had the same sysmptoms, even putting a PCI video card, a P4D in place of the Core2 processor, changed out the memory...

Nada.

So instead of the computer being down for a day while I did the upgrade it was down for almost a month and cost me an additional $35 to send the motherboard to ASUS.

I have just found this forum so if had found it earlier I may have knon to not buy the P5K?

Have you spoke with ASUS Tech Support? They have to approve the return.

Good luck.

Oh yea, when I got the new baord back I found that the memory the web site I bought the parts from had the wrong memory listed in their spec's, may want to look in the manual or on the ASUS web site to see if you have the correct memory, I had eec buffered memory, didn't work in the P5K.

As I only got the board, cpu, ram, etc yesterday I'm hoping I can just return it to the store I ordered it from and be covered under the UK's consumer protection laws guaranteeing an exchange or refund.

I'd definately try different RAM, on the compatability list or not. I had issues with bootup with my P5K as well because the RAM I had didn't play nice with it though recommended. I'm sure you've tried each stick by itself already?

RMA or exchange/refund if it hasn't been long since you bought it.

EDIT: If your board is ever bad out of the box the best thing to do is get it exchanged quickly, the more time spent trying to 'fix' it is more time you could actually damage it and be refused an RMA. You may have to wait a little longer, but you know for sure that you'll eventually get something that will work.

Varify the video card. Also be sure there extra power connector is plugged into the video card. Thats the 6 or 8 pin plug to the PCI-E video card. Sounds like a video card issue to me so far.
