9500M 8600M New name for the same thing?

alright i was wondering if the laptop GPUs were undergoing the same thing as the low end cards (8400/8500 into 9xxx names)

a friend of mine wants a new laptop and shes being pushed into all the new stuff, of course $2k+ later shes out of alot of money and potentaly some of that could have been saved so i was wondering if there was any difference between the 2.
