Picking an ATI for dual

Hello

The P45 does support XFIRE

when buying a card, my opinion would be too buy the best card you can afford.
One single card is much better than a xfire situation as you have less current draw, less heat. But then if you have say a 4870 and want more then off course you start too xfire.

But others on here who know more may chime in.

I would recomend 2x 4850s that should come to about 400 bucks. Its a very strong combo and fast enough for any modern game. And yes the P45 only does Xfire, not SLI. I have one and its a great chipset

Better figure on another 150 - 200.00 more for a bigger PSU running those 2 cards also...need at least a 850w PSU for those...a good one...

If price starts to come a factor then you might want to check out 2 HD 3870's...those can still be ran on a 600 - 700w PSU with a good OC...

850w? No.. extreme PSU calc says about 483 watts for my system at full load, which isn't really gona happen. My 550 would be almost enough.

Getting a 620HX would be more than plenty for the setup.

And you be hope that 2 3870's can run on a 600-700W PSU. 2x 2900's can and those 3870's use ALOT less power. 500W might be on the limit getting a Corsair 620HX will give it a good run and even have room for a 2x 4870 ish type setup in the future if desired.

If you look at the power consumption on Ana and Hard on the 4870's...full load...just one card...438w...

A pair of 4850's will net you around $330-$350 before any rebates -- I picked up a pair of Sapphires for $359 including shipping, minus a $30 MIR if I choose to do it. You can of course always start with a single 4850 / 4870 if you like, the 4850 is my personal choice just because the performance is too near the 4870 (at equal clocks) for substantially less money.

And EPIC LOLz at 850W power supply; no way :) Figure about 550W for a pair of 450's, and 600W for a pair of 4870's. I'm on an XCLIO 650W modular unit with my 3.6Ghz Q9450 and a pair of 800/2400 clocked 3870's and I'm having zero issues; I don't expect any further issues with the 4850's either.

Your best bet at $300-400 is two 4850s, as others have said. A 600W or more power supply should be fine for that setup.
If you can afford it you should consider an X38 motherboard, being able to run 16x/16x PCI Express lanes would help a little, but it's not necessary. The ASUS P5E is pretty popular.
