Hi guys my PC in my sig seems to be dieing :(

It keeps on freezing, meaning i have to reboot, also when i turn the computer on some times it freezes during boot, but works fine as soon as eject the empty DVD drive!

Anyway i have reinstalled, and even that kept on stalling and crashing, finally got vista on there, took 3 hours!!!

Both my drives seem to be playing up!

Is it the PSU and drives that are gone?

Drives:
Plextor PX800A
Samsung DVD

Did you run any diagnostics on the components? Powermax for the hdd's http://majorgeeks.com/Maxtor_Powermax_d1386.html 80gig Maxtors have to had better times..
Memtest for the ram http://www.memtest86.com/download.html
Check your voltage rails with a dmm?

Sorry sig is out of date, i am running on a WD 500Gb now, and seems fine, ram is ok too. I have noticed its just the Optical Drives that seem to just stop working, they will install half a program and then it just says unavailable!

Is it something to do with the mobo? three of my drives done work, which is odd!

What is your "sata mode", or something like that, set at. IDE, raid, or ahci in the bios?
Does it crash on you when the dvd drives are un-attached with just the hdd hooked up?

This system works fine without the drives connected, however using the drives can crash out the whole system, but it work again as soon as i eject it.

In the bios it is set to IDE mode, not sure which one is right, however both the sata and IDE drive dont only work about 50% of the time.

Really odd, cus if they were broken i would expect the to not work at all, not now and then when they feel like it!!!

You think maybe PSU is not giving out enough juice?

Sorry for the delay..
I would check the voltage rails with a digital multimeter. http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=403837
I'd follow the oc extreme one. Just measure at one of the 4 pin molex plugs off the psu. It's super easy. This will check the 12 and 5 rail.
Measure before/after hooking the drives up, one at a time. Maybe one of them has a short??
I've had dvd drives(sata) not playing well with my mb's sata interface before. But usually the IDE is pretty reliable.

Take the DVD Drive out, put in another drive and see if the problem persists.

I have a CDRW Drive that started acting up in my Mother's CPU that prevented Windows from functioning. Solution? Bought another drive and the problem never occured again.

Having the Optical Drive put Windows to a halt is not uncommon and, dates back to Windows 98.
