I just bought an acer aspire one and it comes with an Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz processor. Is this the same clock for clock as a core 2 duo? What process is it based on?

umm the process is a 45nm and its a Atom based cpu. at 1.6ghz with HT the Atom cpu has the performance of a old Banis cpu at 1.4ghz.

quick google says P4
What?
Banias is a Pentium M. And no way an Atom can compare to a 1.4GHz P-M.

Atom at 1.6GHz would roughly compare to a Celeron M at around 1GHz.
Of course performance will vary depending on app.

is a banis a PIII or PIV?

quick google says P4
Banis core is a highly tweaked P-III, as the team that first started working on banis. took the P-III(P6) core and reworked/tweaeked/added/removed. somethings to make a really eff cpu.

yea well in seti it matches the 1.4ghz banis core. now keep in mind that alot of later celeron-m's are based on the dothan core, which is faster then banis.

The main point is the TDP, PIII (1ghz) = 26 watts vs Atom (1.6ghz) = 4 watts.

Now that is some feat!

The Atom does a good job at running everyday applications and combined with a small video resolution is pretty snappy....nice. :)

thats for sure, i just wish my MITX board had the 2.4 TDP atom 1.6ghz/HT cpu instead. 4watts TDP is still nothing to sneeze at for heatoutput, i enjoy using my atom box from time to time. imo its pretty good at seti crunching, avg 400+RAC

I wonder if they will release dual core atom's that will boost the performance and keep the TDP quite low.

Supposed to later this year Q3/Q4.

right! the new dual core atoms come out close to the end of this year. i just wonder if the true dual cores will still have HT enabled, i sure hope so. since it makes the cpu about 25-30% more EFF per clock. TDP may not go up much more, i think worst case for dual core with HT is about 8-10 watts. 10watts is a Net-Desktop is nothing compared to what even the smalled desktops are at. even if you look at the celeron-l's at 35watts vs dualcores at 65watts.
