Ok, here's the deal. I called Gigabyte to try to resolve this Overclocking issue with my cheap ram. They told me "The Cpu speed controls the RAM speed, so when one goes up, so does the other. There is no way to lock the RAM at stock speeds and only bump up the CPU." I told her that I had cheap ram and she said that I need to upgrade.

SOOO, I bit the bullet today and picked up 4gb of Corsair Dominator pc8500 DDR2 at Directron.com (I live in houston, so I picked it up at will call) and installed it this evening. It wasn't as easy as just adding in the DIMMs as I have the Zalman DuOrb Air cooler. I had to remove my mobo to re-orient the Zalman to where I could add the RAM with the cooling fan block. I started the computer and was Immediately able to OC it to 2.66GHZ. I ran Prime95 for a while with it at this speed and then OC'd it to 2.80GHZ where it is now. The RAM is running at 2.1V and the CPU is at 1.28V. It's stable through Prime95 for as long as i let it go (1hr) and Here are my new scores.

3dmark 05 - 19052
3dmark 06 - 15616

So that's better than what it was by a pretty good margin. Do those numbers seem right for my specs in crossfire?

Steve

I'd expect more, but it could be the cpu holding you back. I just break the 13k in 06 mark with an e8200 @ 3.8 and a single 4850.

You can already tell that it's CPU limited now, because it went up by 2,000 points with a modest overclock. You can OC that chip pretty easily to 3.2-3.4 and maybe even 3.6 with some voltage adjustments.

The rep telling you that when you overclock the CPU, you overclock the ram (and that you have no choice) was wrong. You have dividers for overclocking the CPU without overclocking the RAM. If you don't change the divider and keep it at 1:1 then yea, overclocking the CPU also overclocks the RAM. But when you use dividers you can keep your RAM near a general area and adjust timings so that no matter what FSB you're at, your RAM can be running within its limits without holding back the CPU too much. That's the whole point.

Upped the CPU to 3.0ghz now and it's running stable. Ram is running at 1066. 3dmark 05 score is now 20296
