how to get winxp to reveal HD user?

How can I get WinXP to monitor hard drive activity and tell me what program is hogging HD resources. Sometime windows thrashes around with the HD light on full, and it is unresponsive during that time. I'd like to know what application is using the HD. I turned off the write back cache on the HD and that has reduced the problem quite a bit, but its still happening.

Would that work for telling me what app is hanging up my system on shutdown??

It could, so long as you can still access the program. You may also want to give Process Explorer a try. SysInternals made that one too and it might be able to tell you even more.

Just a guess, but drivers are typically what I look at first when having shutdown issues. Sound cards are usually a major culprit. Services are worth a hard look at as well.
