Hi there all :santa2:

First time i overclock a cpu and still a bit confused about some things.so yust asking some questions :D

Here are my total system specs:
Asus p5q motherboard
antec nine hundred case
Artic freezer 7 pro
e8500 dual core proccesor
GEIL black dragon drr2 800MHZ
sapphire hd4870 video card
samsung spinpoint 1tb

At first have a aim of 3.8ghz(was expecting a C0 stepping but i got an E0 :santa2: ) thats why i havent bought that high speed ram. At second speedfan and my bios displays weird RPMS for my artic freezer 7 pro cooler it displays + 2700 RPM while its max is 2500 RPM and it isn't rreally making that much noise! so i doubt its running at those speeds.

temps at stock speed are(with a tj max of 100):
idle 31C
load 40c(after one hour of blend test of prime95)

myself was thinking about this config for my bios.(for 3.8ghz)

AI Tweaker:
Ai overclock: manual
CPU ratio setting: auto
FSB frequency: 400
PCIE freq: 100 (same for PCIE 2.0 cards?)
FSB strap to NB: Auto (yust leave auto?)
DRAM freq: Auto
everything Auto then
DRAM static : Auto
DRAM read training: Auto
MEM OC charger: Auto
Ai Clock Twister: Auto
Ai Transaction booster: Auto
Common Performance level: Auto
Pull ins all set: disabled

CPU Voltage: 1.25 'ish

CPU GTL Voltage Reference (0/2): auto
CPU GTL (1/3): auto
CPU PLL: auto
FSB Termination: auto
DRAM: auto
NB Voltage: auto
NB GTL Reference: Auto
SB Voltage: auto
PCIE Sata voltage: auto

Load line Calibration: Enabled
CPU spread: disabled
PCIE spread: disabled
CPU clock Skew: Auto
NB clock skew: Auto

Next page: Advanced: CPU Configuration
CPU Ratio Setting: Auto
C1E Support: Disabled
Max CPUID Value Limit: Disabled
Intel Virtualization: Disabled
CPU TM: Disabled
Execute Disable bit: Disabled
Intel Speed Step: Disabled

So do those settings looks alright or do i need to change something?(ofcourse i wont go to a fsb of 400 in one go but in small steps.)

You really should put voltages in for:

CPU PLL:
FSB Termination:
DRAM:
NB Voltage:
SB Voltage:

OCing will be easier if you have these numbers static.

When you start changing the FSB/Mulitplier, the bios will adjust the (auto) voltages and on some occasions it is either too much or not enough.

It will take a bit of time to find what voltages you need.

This is a good guide to start with.

One more thing: I would leave the memory on auto until you can get a stable setup, then you can go tune the memory.

Well my first overclock kind of failed.
used these settings:

CPU PLL: 1.5
FSB termination: 1.2
DRAM:auto
NB voltage: 1.38
SB voltage auto.
FSB: 366
rest of settings same as above.
(yes i know these setting are a bit of overkill but i kidna want to use the same setting for 3.8 GHZ)

At first it would boot correctly and start vista well i ran 1 hour of blend test with prime95 without any errors with a max temp of 48C.only i left the memory on auto but the mobo hold an 1:1 ratio with fsb leaving my ram on a speed of 732mhz.

Well after that one hour of blend test i restarted the comp to higher the fsb even some more only the problem was that it wouldn't boot up! I wouldnt even get an (video)signal from the computer. So i couldnt see a damn thing no error notting(didnt pressed del yet).so after some messing i resetted the cmos and than started the computer again pressing del than it complained one power cable of the videocard was not conected than i opened it again and connected it than it would start up well again.

So my question is what was the problem that i couldnt get a signal of my comp.
Was it the videocard missing one power cable?
Or was it my ram running at 732 Mhz maybe?(my mobo in bios screen says it can have some problems if ram is below 800mhz by qvl specifications or something but can that result in no image from the computer?)
or was it the overclock?
Or somethign else i don't know.?

When I change a setting in Bios and I don't get a signal it has always meant that the computer did not like that change. i've removed the power cord, pressed the power button to remove all power from MB, reconnect and reboot.

In my case, memory, has caused a lot of my issues, so when trying to OC, I usually put in my memory timings 7-7-7-21 @ 1.8 V for 1066 MHz. My memory is rated 9-9-9-27 @1.9 V for 1600 MHz, but I always get errors with this, so I stick to the timings/volts that I know will be stable.

Keep your memory at that stable level and then push your CPU. On my board, I can choose the speed at which to run my memory.

Just to give you an idea, here are some of my bios settings: Items in RED are the memory settings I mentioned to you.

same as last time the computer starts up well the first time ran some prime95 for an hour 47C load temps.Than i go restart my pc again but it fails to boot yust as last time i get no signal. i am clueless now why the first boot works but the second does not..could a old BIOS be also the fault?cause atm i am using the bios came shipped with the motherboard.also when my comp fails to boot my graphics card fan blows fairly hard.
