Best price/performance drive(s) under $100?

Ideally probably two drives in raid 0, unless there's a better single drive for performance.

The drive(s) must have:

- Minimum capacity 250 GB
- SATA interface

My RAID controller is from Nvidia, since this will probably have impact on performance. Anyone know how it stacks up vs. AMD and Intel RAID controllers?

I was looking either two Samsung Spinport F1 16MB cache 320GB or two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 16MB cache 250GB, which would be better?

Got one of these for my external backup drives and... wow the drive is an amazing one. I got 2x 320's in my rig raided but the 640 surely helps out on backups, yeilding nearly a 90MB/s transfer rate for me for over 450GIG file backup transfers.

I have seen the 300GB Velociraptor's on ebay as low as $180 lately, and the 150GB as low as $125. You can't beat the performance of these drives as single drives not to mention in a raid setup. I have 2 150GB Velociraptors with the onboards NVraid and they are amazing. The NVraid wont choke unless I add a 3rd drive then it will cap me on bandwith. I have a 1TB WD Caviar Black for storage and backups and that drive is really fast too with it's 32mb buffer, but it can't touch the raptors. Check this thread for some ideas on how different drives perform in raid0.

Only 1 issue.... for $50 more you get faster seek times vs... 490GB more, and faster MB/s on read/writes and $50 cheaper. Don't know if I'd want to trade that off. Expecially how big programs are getting these days I could fill up a 150Gig easily, 300Gig wouldn't be too far behind.

I have to throw another vote on the 640's. You just can't beat them for the size, price, and, performance you get for the money spent.

Given the drives he mentioned in the first post it's possible he was looking at <$100 total for two drives and not <$100 each like all the suggestions. Need the OP to post again and tell us.

Ya, I was looking for the best drive configuration for under $100 total, but if those WD 640GB drives are that good then I will spend more if its really worth the money.

I just bought two 640 aaks's. Thank you thread.

This moves my 750GB transfer drive to be relabeled as my storage drive.
1 150GB Raptor is my main OS drive, games and programs.
1 750GB drive will now be flac/mp3 and ripped ISO's of my games so I don't have to always put a DVD/CD in when I want to play. Plus other random storage. This drive also contains all VSTi's I use for music production, which is VERY space heavy (200-300GB)
1 200GB drive is important data storage. Great drive, had it for a while. Now I can make a redundant copy on the 750GB just in case.

the 2x640's will now become my project drive. heavy rar extraction, data movement, rip CD's/DVD's + encoding, compress and render files from music production. Everything on this drive only stays for a little while. Eventually becoming either transferred to the OS drive or one of the backup drives.

I am finally happy. (Could be the fact that I had been waiting to buy these for a while and I also got a Maxiumus II in the process so that I can max out my OC, that's making me happy too. hehehe)

About a week ago bought a samsung F1 (1TB) and am getting about 108MB/sec read and 100 MB/sec write (according to ATTO Disk Benchmark), using an Adaptec 1210sa (reflashed back to a sil3112) in the server listed in my sig.
