Share all of C drive XP and VISTA

OK, I know it may sound simple to you, and you may get alot of posts on this, but pls steer me in the right direction here, I have no hair left LOL I got a Vista Laptop, and just put together a lil comp for the wife to go on MSN, running XP. BUT, I wouold like to share both C drives on each comp. I have set them to full share, but when I try to access one, from the other, it says access denined, contact network administrator for permission.

Any help would be appreciated

First, are you running a software firewall? Make sure the ports are open for sharing. I don't think port forwarding would be required so you shouldn't have to toy with the router. Run services.msc to make sure server is running and any related services.

Also, the person needs to have the correct privileges in place. If you want her to write to the C drive, she would need admin privileges, not recommended. If you haven't, make an account for her on your machine which is preferrably passworded so she can log in through the network and vice versa.

Make sure you're in the same network which should be WORKGROUP for Vista. You may need to change hers. Also, see if you can ping her IP.

I'm not very knowledgeable of networking but perhaps that may be of some help.

Sharing the root of C is a horrible idea, but since that's not the question, that's not the answer you need.

If you are using "user1" to login to one computer, and "user2" to login to the other, of course they cannot access the other PC because they have different users. user1 would need to be setup on both PCs, may as well do user2 as well. Then your access denied should go away.

I dont care about admin privelages or anything, Wife never gets into that stuff anyways. I HATE having to do user logons when I turn a comp on. We have allways just shared the one computer untill now(laptop with Vista) Now she will be using the lil PII 450 for MSN and stuff to talk to me when I'm out of town. I have hooked up an external HDD to the PII and can access that no problem. Just thought it would be nice if I can just swap files between C drives easilly. I also want to set up a 3rd comp in the shop, in which I would send my CNC milling files from laptop to the shop comp.

But like I said, i hate having to select a user when starting up a computer.

Thx in advance

OK I think I have figured it out. I was trying to get accesss to the programs folder, but it wont let me. I got desktop atleast, and my documents so all is good, I can transfer her stuff over now atleast

it is the way windows works, under Xp the documents and settings folders / documents and such are only accesible via the account for that folder.

even when you share all of C drive, it does NOT over write the sharing persmissions.

so as said, you would need to create the user of the XP machine, make them an account on the Vista Machine - then add that user to the Security section of the C folder and sub folders on the XP machine and same with the Vista user.

there is no real easy way, you cant just right click / share all.

you also also log into a computer with one user/pass and the se a diff user / pass to connect to a network share.

and if you dont like logging in, you can set it to auto login what ever user you want.

on XP you could of just enabled the shared folder and used it

After you have the users created, you can go to start, settings, control panel, user accounts, but I find it's easier to do:

Start, Run

control userpasswords2

Then just select the user that you want to autologin, uncheck the "users must enter a username......." and it will ask you to enter the password. If there's no password, just hit OK.
