Rampage, Maximus II, other? Need 475mhz+ fsb with good DDR2 memory support

Hi guys. I'm on a commando currently and it does a good job of reaching 455-460fsb but I need more. I'm looking for a mobo thats going to get my q9550 to 4ghz+ as I am already at 3867 (455x8) on a lower voltage. I know there are a few tricks I could still pull out of the commando, but the truth is I'm ready to get something a bit newer for good SATA support with lots of drives and some RAID.

I have a couple requirements:

Needs to have pci-e 2.0 support, with 1 PCI slot for my sound card (preferrably a significant distance away from the pci-e slot.

I do not plan on crossfiring.. at any forseable time in the future. Though if an x48 chipset can match the fsb I want that a P45 can reach, it won't be ruled out.

Needs DDR2 support, with good OCing for 2GB modules. My commando has a hard time OCing 2GB modules atm, and only works well with 1GB sticks. I would like to run 8GB somewhat soon, which would be 4x2GB. The one thing my commando severely lacked were timing controls within the bios and more voltage options for the motherboard itself.

I would like to NOT be held back by my fsb. I want to be able to hit my CPU's max (8.5 multi) without the motherboard stopping me. I want the best performance I can get.

I'm looking for QUALITY here and I am willing to spend the money here if it's worth it.

What do you guys think?

The only things I've really looked at are the maxiumus II and Rampage, but that's because I like asus. I don't really like the layouts of the P5Q's (specifically the PCI slot relation to the video card, I want my sound card AWAY from the heat of my 4870. Plus the cooling on the board messing with my aftermarket cooling of my CPU and RAM)

If it's ddr3, then the obvious choice is the rampage extreme. But since it's ddr2, your choice gets limited.

Since you want to run a quad...the DDR2 X38/48 chipsets are not the best of choices...its going to be hard to reach past 470 or so...the rampage loves dual cores more then quads...

Asus P5Q Deluxe is the board you should really check into since you are wanting to stay DDR2...I did read above

...but this board is made more towards a quad then the eariler X38.48 chipsets

Now if you do go with a DDR3...then the Rampage Extreme would be perfect with that quad

P45 is unless you get the Rampage Extreme (X48 based).

Maximus II Formula, Q9550 @ 4.22Ghz (8.5 x 498mhz 12hrs othos stable with 1.38 Vcore) used this settings only when benchmarking tho. For 24/7 im using 3.99Ghz (470mhz with 1.3 vcore). Just chippin' in....

Ah, this is good news too. The maximus II did look juicy. I also see that you run 2x2GB of RAM, which is another good thing. My Commando rocks socks, especially for being an only chipset (935), but it's best is definitely seen with 1GB sticks of RAM or a dual core CPU. A quad and 2GB sticks wasn't nice to me.

Let's take out the Rampage Extreme from the equation under the pretense that I'm not really willing to spend the $400 + hundreds more on new RAM just for a few extra mhz. What are some other good choices?

Right now I see we are looking at these:

p5q
Maximus II
lanparty lt X48-T2R (which another poster has said wouldn't be a good choice, being x48 and my 45nm quad might not play well together).

Anyone else have input? I won't be making my purchase until Friday.

i say stick to p45 chipset for that quad since an x38 and x48 are really only good for duals and xfire none of which you plan to use. i have the biostar tpower i45 personally and i have been able to run my quad up to 533x8. good luck and keep us posted on you decision.

Heard any reports of problems with G.Skill RAM, maybe something else that might turn me off? otherwise it's looking like what I want to purchase.

Purchased the Maximus II.

got it from ncixus with insurance + 1day shipping for less than newegg's price with 3 day shipping. They both have 25-30 day return policies anyway on this, so it didn't seem to matter. As long as it's not DOA! Which I'm covered for from Ncix, just means I have to wait longer if it does happen.

I think with time till ship + customs I'll probably have it by Wednesday.

Just playing around and @ 4.04ghz 1.35v but it's only prime stable for about 5 minutes. :P Going to give it just a little more juice. This mobo rocks! So many settings I have no idea what half of them do.
