im working with a client that actually uses a bundled internet/vpn service (cbeyond). basically she wants to get to her server files from her laptop at home or on the go. right now im on her laptop at home and can see the shared office folders but currently have no access to them. the error reads:

shared\ is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

the network path was not found.

for a hardware guy that knows little about networking i was surprised i could get to this point by myself :p when i called their tech support the guy basically said that if you are logged into the vpn and can actually see the folders then it is obviously set up correctly. fair enough.

so then it becomes either an issue of file permissions or firewalls right? oh those who are smarter and me and probably do this for a living, please do lead me in the right direction!

can you ping the IP address of those machines you want to access? you may have to use \\IPaddress (ex \\192.168.1.10) instead of \\server

sometimes DNS services do not pass through, atleast on our DNS servers they dont on our archadic, yet rock solid Nortel box :)

well there is two sets of ip's

the one from the ethernet adapter and the one from the VPN

the ethernet is a 192.168.....

the one form the VPN is 10.xxxxxxx

when i ping the 192 i get nothing but when i ping the VPN it goes through

this is what i have found after hours of pulling hair

If you can net view IP while net view \\hostname gives you "System error 53 has occurred" and "The network path was not found", you may have the Name Resolution issue. I make sure you have correct DNS settings. 2. Have you enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP? 3. You may need WINS if you have a mixed OS environment. 4. You may try LMHOSTS.

netbios is enabled. im about to say screw it and install hamachi

when you do ip config/all whilst connected to the vpn what do you get?

im guessing all you get is another ip and subnet mask. may be a dns address, hopefully no gateway, but you might have a gateway depending how its set up.

so, the laptop is connected to the vpn.

do you have the name of the server in the office?

go to cmd prompt, and type nslookup. then type the name of the server in the office.
if that resolved to an ip then dns is working.

if not, get the servers ip address and see if you can ping that.

if you can ping, try to map a drive to her share.

if you cant ping, check the antivirus software isnt blocking packets from unknown networks.

thats fine, that just means an ip has been setup from the vpn.

can you show me an ipconfig /all ?

Do you know the IP of the server/workstation you're trying to access remotely? If so, try to access it via \\ip (\\10.255.100.xxx). That will work around DNS issues which you can then resolve later if needed.

yeah, when i do it that way "the network path was not found". although i can ping it just fine. sort of leads me to believe there is some sort of file sharing/firewall issue but i have no idea.

I assume the username you are logged in with has appropriate permission to view what you're trying to view?
