I just got my folding rig parts and am about to boot her back up and fold 24/7... however I was thinking about replacing the 8600 GTS in a month or so. What would give me the best bang for the buck and still be able to play new games? (sorry if this came up, I've been gone a long time)

I'm partial to the 8800GTS (G92) myself. It needs only one power connector and runs much cooler than the 9800 GTX while making almost the same ppd. It exhausts out of the case too, which I feel is important. None of the dual slot cards come cheap though. Bang for the buck probably goes to the single slot 8800 GS, now rebadged to become the 9800 GSO. If money is no object or you will only ever have one vid card, the 260GTX and 280GTX are far and away the best producers and don't suffer from UM/EUE syndrome, but they are quite pricey.

Did they discontinue the G92 flavor of the 9800GT / 8800GT??

I could have sworn the G92 cards had 128 shader procs... Am I mistaken on that number?

The 9800/8800GT are G92s, but have only 112 shaders. The 8800GTS 512MB is essentially an underclocked 9800GTX, with 128 shaders. The 8800GTS 320MB and 640MB are G80s.

great deal here IMO.

this is a g92 card with 128sp - just renamed.

just like ChasR, i'm VERY partial to the g92 gts - for the fact it vents out the rear of the case gets rid of that heat. plus it drops close to 6k ppd and only uses a single power plug.

i have three g92 gts's on an older 680i motherboard and it makes pretty good ppd while venting all that heat out of the case.
