Data corruption

Started: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=584307

No replys..

Heres the update on what I've done. Updated to F5, found out F4 bios did not have x15 multiplier for my FSB, F5 did. Much faster and smoother, upon leaving the PC off for the night however and rebooting in the morning, MASSIVE data corruption.

Let me also say this: THE DATA IS STILL THERE. I'm not sure if its actual data corruption or filesystem corruption, if I run a checkdisk everything works fine. Sadly, sometimes I cant even boot into windows and restore wont work meaning a nice reinstall.

Anyone have any ideas?.

Perhaps im going about this wrong.

I just read someone else had the same problem as me, on 64bit systems. His problem seemed to go away on 32bit although there was still a fault issue, he swapped his CPU out and the problem seemed to go away.

I've.. tried doing this before, but I can give it another shot with a new CPU I have that I havent tried yet, although its the same kind of processor...

Perhaps the MB has a compatiablity issue with the CPU?. (AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+) I don't know, I find it strange nobody has responded yet though. This problem has been a major issue - I have to spend over a hour installing all the data I keep losing every day. Even if you dont KNOW what the issue is, I would still love to know somebody is at least aware of this post. Anyway, ill add another response tommorow since this problem seems to occure whenever I power down for a bit or a few days with it powered up... Perhaps BIOS is sending bad signals to the HDD's?.

Sunrex,
1. Welcome to the forums!
2. What components do you have in your computer? The more detail the better
3. I don't think you'd be able to install Windows, or even boot up without having a motherboard and CPU that were compatible. Chances are that's not your problem
4. You say you had a jeweler bend some pins on the CPU? What needed to be bent? Usually CPUs don't require any modification whatsoever to fit in the socket. If they do, usually they are great key-chains since they won't work as processors.
5. Check to make sure that the jumpers are all playing nice on the IDE drive and that the cable is oriented right ( red strip = pin 1 ).
6. If you have a copy of 32 bit windows, try that and see if it fixes anything.
7. Make sure that there aren't any little burnt spots on the mobo ( sounds crazy I know ). Sometimes a tiny physical problem can bork your software.
Let us know what you turn up.
-Drew

I've been playing pingpong on this forum trying to figure out the issue http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...need-help.html

But I still haven't solved the problem..

No, I had bent a pin on the CPU and rather then chance it I decided to take it to a jeweler unbend it. However, im still having the same issue with a RMA cpu.. so its not the CPU.

Perhaps the MB just can't use 64bit mode right?. I dont understand this problem. I dont think 32bit mode will do anything though.

It's a SATA drive in IDE mode, well 2 SATA drives in IDE mode. They work fine on another computer but I dont need to use IDE mode. I'm not sure why this is happening... The data seems to be corrupted, but on a restart sometimes it works fine and other times I have to reinstall.

Hmmm.....
The drives are connected via SATA cables, yes? What makes you say they are running in IDE mode? I'm unfamiliar with this....do you have them hooked up with SATA->IDE converters perhaps?

Ok, here are the things I would do to figure out what is going on:

-Make sure that ANY overclock you have on there is set back to stock. We'll tackle the OC later
-Go over each and EVERY cable, and push it in a bit, making sure they are all seated properly and correctly
-Make sure there is nothing potentially conductive/capacitive laying on your mobo: Loose screws, an extra motherboard standoff, bits of artic silver, etc...
-Trying building the system out of the case on a wood table and see if you still get the corruption.
-Have you tried measuring the rails on the PSU with a multi-meter? th|nk3r had a good idea there...
-How is your case set up? You said it was a smaller form factor, perhaps it's overheating? Can you show us a picture of it maybe?
-Run Memtest+ for 6-12 hours and let us know if it errors
-Unplug anything un-necessary ( sound cards, TV tuners, CD drives, etc ) and try it with the minimum necessary stuff

Can you let us know what all your voltages are? Sometimes the auto setting on mobos can be, uh, less than accurate. Try using CPU-Z or Mobo Monitor to grab a ballpark figure.

Motherboards usually don't give a h00t whether its running 64 or 32bit software, as long as the hardware is cool with it, which yours is. Just make sure that every driver is a 64 bit driver.

Hope this helps
-Drew

I'm going to continue updating on the other forum since I have more support there, but I will continue to respond to replys here.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811144109 - thats the case. For the most part anyway, same design and manufacturer. PSU was replaced with a 587 watt one (Or something, 585 perhaps).

I'm currently running memtest, but its going to be done in a hour or so. Apparently its just going through my ram like its paper, no errors yet. Unless theres a setting for stress test?. I'll look into it once im home again.

Downloading CPU-Z now, and that other one. Won't be able to respond until morning though.

My MB is being held in the tray by screws that came with the case. I don't believe there metal.

I've gone over basiclly every cable since whenever I remove the tray I have to remove the cables as well.

For the IDE mode, its a option in my BIOS. I can set the drives to IDE mode to avoid ACHI or whatever it is.

-edit- My Northbridge does run at 80-110C. But according to Gigabyte tech, they cooked it in a oven to 160 something and it ran stable?. I think its BS personally...

"80-110C."?
Really, Celsius? As in hot enough to boil water?

If you are right about the units, you need to throw a fan on that thing. Maybe replace its stock TIM and make sure the HS is properly seated. Do you have your NB seriously overvolted?

NB is normal. BIOS shows normal, Gigabyte tech support confirmed that was the normal operating temp.

MBM wont work, my MB is apparently not on the list.

Ran otheroes (whatever, I cant remember the correct spelling) for 12+ hours, temp on CPU stayed 55C. NB went to.. 112C?. No stability problems.

Heres CPU-Z and HWMonitor outputs:

Sunrex,
From what you've said so far, I believe that your NB is overheating, I don't care what Gigabyte says. 110C is an incredibly hot chip, especially for something that is supposed to be low TDP. Put a fan on it and try and get as much air through your case as possible.

Also, I'd try running your HDDs in AHCI mode, as I believe that is the native interface for SATA drives. This will require some hoops to jump through, but at this point in the troubleshooting process, that's where I'd go next. Here's the article Wikipedia links to about the process for changing into AHCI mode with Vista: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976

I have no idea what sort of fan I should put on it though, The NB is not actually a square shape. If you look up images of the Motherboard online (You can find out what it is from the link on the very first post) you would see its going to be hard to find a fan for it.

I'm hoping its the NB anyway, and not the SB. HWMonitor wont actually tell me what sensor it is but on newegg reviews say the NB gets hotter then the surface of the sun *lol*.

I'll try what you suggested on AHCI mode, but wont that make both hard drives one (RAID?). Donno, ill try it anyway. Thanks!.

IDE mode isn't your problem so you might as well leave that alone. But 110c for your NB is crazy. List your full system specs in a signature it helps

They are in the huge quotes above. You just have to look through them to see the components.

And IDE mode COULD in theory be the issue, if the SATA controller is messing up emulating IDE mode...

Cooling is a major issue though, I have the case open to cool it down. If I close it my GC reaches 100+C in Crysis (But with it open its only like 70ishC.) But thats expected from a micro case, im gonna have to find a cooling solution for it.

Heres the specs though:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103773 (I ordered another a month or so later, so I have 2 CPU's)

Theres also a WD HDD in it.

Edit: Forgot the MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128090

Obviously heat could be your issue. What motherboard do you have?

You don't necessarily need to get a fan specially fit for you NB. Just rig a fan to direct air right onto it. They sell fans smaller than 80cm. You could get a 40cm or somehting.
