Mandrake and USB

I have an all-usb setup. I have an IOgear USb KVM switch that I use on my G4 and my PC. I have tried to install Mandrake 8.1 but cannot even get a response during setup. Nothing happens, keyboard and mouse do not work at all. Any ideas?

I assume you are trying to set it up with the KVM Connected? Have you tried installing with the mouse and keyboard connected directly to the box? I am not sure how well linux handles usb KVM's as from what I have heard sometimes the PS2 KVM support is sketchy at best. Try doing an install with it connected straight to the box and see what happens.

That's not what I want to hear! I have a PS/2 KVM switch I was planning on using, so I don't have to have multiple setups for my rigs. But I was planning on setting my Linux box up seperate from the KVM, since my desk where I work is a bit too cramped to keep moving systems around, so I have a test bed set off to the side where I was going to do the actual setup.

LOL Take note of the "sometimes" for the most part from what I have heard it works quite well. I just am not sure about USB being that USB support was more of a new thing for Linux as it did not before. So in order to troubleshoot a USB KVM Problem you would need to eliminate the source and give it a go.

I've used a 16-computer KVM with Linux machines with no trouble.

The Mandrake installer supports USB, but maybe the hub in the KVM is confusing it. I've heard of KVMs confusing the computer regardless of the OS.

Have you tried using the latest kernel? Any USb/KVM drivers?

There's no KVM drivers, just USB drivers. A good KVM shouldn't need drivers.

Whats so complicated about a KVM?
I would double-double check your connections and usb support in your kernel.

Well, some KVMs seem to confuse some computers by dropping the PS/2 signal, so they think the device gets unplugged, etc. I've seen KVMs freeze some computers, before.

Here's a bump for this. I finally got Mandrake 8.1 to install with the USB KVM switch. I upgraded to a newer beta bios on my tyan board and that seems to help. However, ever once in a while my mouse/keyboard will just disappear and not come back. There's no way I can tell to get it to work again afterwards either. I've never had any troubles with this kvm switch on winxp, or my Mac. Only with Mandrake 8.1 and 8.2b3.

I guess I should just call IOGEAR, but they'll probably just blame it on Tyan who will blame it on Mandrake and so forth.
