Exclamation Very inmportant question!... I think..

Okay, a guy I know at school just told me that pentium's are far better to overclock cause AMD chips will always overheat. Is this true? or can you overclock AMD chips just as easily, because I would rather not have to purchase INtel unless I have to. So, little help please!

I would think this should go into like General Hardware or something. BUt anyway. If you have a good heatsink an AMD is better. An Athlon will do more calculations per clock cycle.

Welcome to the forum!

You will proponents of both brands here. Your friend is both right and wrong. Current AMD chips do run hotter, but with proper cooling can often overclock more. They have more options to tweak than Intel's chips. AMD processors also run on a faster bus, 133MHz, VS Intel's 100MHz.
FYI, my family owns stock in AMD

Just so you learn a little about this forum:
We like to keep things sorted by catagory. New people are given a lot of leeway and this question is pretty general. I suspect the moderators will leave it here for a while and then move it to "debates".
I also noticed that you posted the question twice. If you open the second one there is an edit button in the lower right corner of your post. Press it and another window comes up. In that window at the top is the option to delete. Since you are the thread starter it will delete the whole thread.

OKay, thanks. i had noticed I had accidentally posted it twice, but I wasn't sure how to delete it, so I'll go do that right away. Other than that I'll try to keep my posts in the proper category as well.

I'm glad to hear that with proper cooling you can still overclock an AMD, i was kinda worried for a bit. I am right now a mac user, but if I get a PC, It won't be intel for sure now.

You go you crazy little cow,
If all goes well you'll be able to see how my AMD overclocking experience goes. I'm voting AMd on this one, but I don't know a fat lot of anything.
Who was it told you?

Some guy from a grade up of me, Luc. He thinks he's pretty techno savvy. I told him that with proper ventilaiton it wouldn't be much of a problem. But he insisted that AMD's always overheat, even with numerous fans and a good heatsink. I was loathe to believe him, so i decided to get people's opinions here.

well i havent read every post here, so sry if this has been said but
amd seems to be 200~400 mhz faster in benchies then inel..
i mean the amd 200+ is only 1.666 or 1.67 (not to sure which) and its faster or equal to the northwood p4 2ghz.. so id go with amd and a good cooling method..

Yes, AMDs do have a tendency to overheat, but with proper cooling it's not a problem, like you said. As you can see by my sig I'm an Intel fan but I've worked on AMDs too... my gf has an AMD system she built herself, but she didn't know a thing about OCing til she met me, and now her T-Bird 1.4 is somewhere around 1.6 last I checked (thanks to me, of course... ). But I digress, I don't think either's so much better than the other, they both have their strong spots. Right now, AMD probably has a better overall processor, though I haven't used a Northwood yet. I run Intel in my 2nd computer because it's in my bedroom and I don't want 5 bazillion fans keeping me up all night, and my 1st rig is Intel because I wanted a Dell... I wanted a main computer I could keep all my important stuff on that I wouldn't be tempted to overclock. I'm probably gonna tear the guts out of my other rig next spring or summer and I'm debating wether or not to go Athlon XP or Intel Tualeron. But I have plenty of time to decide that.

EDIT: Ridenow: Intels DO have 133MHz system bus. The Northwood 2.26GHz will be debuting on a quad pumped 133MHz bus, and many P3's have the 133MHz bus flavor as well, starting out with the P3 600EB.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to eventually building my own system, but thatis unlikely to be for many, many months. Therefore I have plenty of time to start making choices about processor. I do admit I am somewhat reticent to get an Intel, because I am a mac user, and get a pentium seems like almost a total about face. I'm glad to hear that AMD is still a good choice, I doubted mainly on the fact that he himself had no personal experience overclokcing an AMD, or anything else for that matter, and simply claimed that this was "common knowledge".

well if your not gonna oc, and youd like a a bigger number on ur cpu and wanna spend about 300 more dollars, then id say buy an intel
if you dont wanna spend so much, wanna oc, and want better benchmarks, then go amd...
but this is always a debate.. so its more up to personal prefence.. and what you want in terms of motherboard features, and so on..
