Getting Videos from DVD to iMovie

I have a mac, and i got the video of my volleyball team winning the 5A Provincial Boys title (i thank you) and i want to take the video and put it onto iMovie to edit so i can put some clips in a recruiting video, what program would i use for this? (Obviously has to work with OSX)

I would use VLC. Use their export wizard and export the video, it will be in mpeg-4 format, I believe. Then just import it in iMovie
