What is good TV viewing software?

I bought a AVerMedia USB HD tuner from the Egg, and while the reception and picture quality is awesome the software is horrible. It corrupted some of my codecs, crashes randomly, and does various other things when I try to record TV shows. All I need is something that will allow me to watch/record HDTV. Any help would be appreciated.
