As my dad taught me, NEVER be in a hurry and always leave so you will arrive at least 10 minutes early upon regular traffic.

How does this help? You won't be tempted to run lights, you won't feel rushed so you will have a much more clear head to pay attention to cars around you by constantly checking your mirrors and instruments.

Always watch entrances and exits when about 50 feet away from them. People, here in Idaho at least, seem to enjoy jetting out in front of traffic from these places.

I've will have had my license for two years in May and I have no driving record at all (knock on wood!), nor have I ever been stopped by the police for anything (knock on wood again!).

As ps2cho and neonblingblinb have stated, never trust your mirrors! I had the privlidge of my first car being a 1978 Ford Pinto which originally never had a passenger side mirror, and the driver's side mirror was small and didn't give much outsight. Thanks to this, I formed a great habbit of always looking over my shoulder when changing lanes or backing up. I have mirrors on both sides now, but I still look over my shoulder as if I didn't have them. Truth is, I almost NEVER use my side mirrors!

Last but not least, and I'm surprised it hasn't been stated yet, DON'T drive for the people around you! Drive defensively for YOURSELF. If you can concentrate on YOUR driving and not worry about everyone else, it helps you focus more on keeping yourself safe and from traffic violations!

I always look over my shoulder to merge, the main reason I use the mirrors is that way I can see if I am inside the lane.

Well since this thread was bumped, I figured I might as well post again.

I learned today that a local swim star died this morning. He was driving drunk, and hit a tree going 75. He had been captain of the swim team at a local high school, graduated last year but he still holds state records in 4 events, and holds more records at the high school.

Honestly I would have to disagree about the mirrors. I would say use them a lot. Yes check over your shoulder for your blindspot but if you aren't checking around you as you drive you need to be more aware. Which is my tidbit of advice:

Always be aware of what is around you. You might be a good driver but a lot of other people aren't. Be aware.

I find myself checking my rear view mirror every 5-10 seconds. Maybe that is obsessive, but I do almost all of my driving at night.

So I got my first taste of being stuck in traffic yesterday. I was stuck at a traffic light for 15+ minutes on my way to school.

It really sucks when you're trying to merge and you can't and you have to turn right soon

Get some blind-spot mirrors, they're absolutely wonderful. Any time you look away from the direction you're moving is a good time for some idiot to cut you off. Decreasing that time is great. Plus, if you're not sure about what you're looking at, you can keep looking further and actually check the blind spot. I put one on both mirrors even though the left side one is possibly a bit redundant. I still find it useful and it looks better that way (keeps the body symmetry of your car).

One thing I didn't see mentioned was to try changing a tire while at home. It's a lot easier to learn how to do it when you're relaxing at home than when you're on the side of a busy freeway in the dark when it's raining and everyone is honking at you. Even if you have AAA you should know how to change your own tire.

Also, I don't know what insurance you have, but Allstate has always been the cheapest for me. I'm 20 years old in Los Angeles and pay only $167/month for full coverage and enhanced liability (more than legally required) on a financed car. Everyone else wants $210-$300. When I had my old Chevy Beretta, I was paying $87 for roughly the same personal injury liability and damage for the other person's car. I think everyone else wanted about $110 then.

You know what really sucks? The capital beltway in rush hour traffic. ...90 minutes to go 30 miles if you're lucky. You can try and be a bit more aggressive with your merging. Most people around here will try and block you out of the lane if you use your indicator, but they will usually make room if you start coming over. You must watch your mirrors though. I *always* signal, but should really stop I hate the DC area traffic.
