Problem is, your drive has the drivers on it from your other computer. Of course it's not going to run well when you just stick it in a new PC. You may be able to run it, but obviously it's slow. I'd strongly recommend backing up the info you need to somewhere else, and then reformatting the drive

OK let me try again...what did you do, start at the beginning. Its not a clean install on the new hardware I take it?

I think if you used what you had and did it properly you'd be just as happy unless its an old slow drive.

That's what I'm trying to say. Reformat the drive, after you back up your current data somewhere else, and it will run smoothly

Whoa hold up everyone, I think some of us are running on Trap's question/assumption here... let's start at square#1:

Rock, please affirm or refute the following:
A. you are using (1) drive only in your "new" pc.
B. this (1) drive contains your previous OS installation, along with your personal data

If these are both the case, then james' spelled out solution is what you're going after. Here it is with some extra detail:

1. back up your data in some manner (by cd/dvd/a second hdd/another's computer on a network...)
2. reformat the HDD
3. reinstall Windows
4. enjoy the speed boost as you update windows and copy your backed up data back onto your drive.

If you have the budget to buy a second drive, as you suggested, now would be a great time to get it as this drive will make step#1 above easy. Further, the practice of keeping your data on a second, non OS drive is a good habit to get into as you won't risk losing your data if/when your OS corrupts/crashes over time.

If statements A and B aren't 100% correct, please let us know the situation better by correcting them.

...and back to the forums, btw

Do a clean install and then see how it is. I'm betting that will solve it

a mismatched/missing onboard graphics driver is one of many potential issues that'll get fixed after a fresh format/reinstallation of your OS.

though, as a cautionary reminder, while you're backing up your data take the extra few minutes to download copies of any ethernet/motherboard drivers you may need, if you don't already have those on hand from an installation cd

...All you need to do is back up your files to a cd/dvd and then format the hard drive.

What is happening is you are mixing up drivers, your using drivers that you shouldn't be and the hardware doesn't know wtf is going on. Put a clean copy of vista on it and you will be fine.

I would speculate the problem is not wrong drivers, but NO drivers. XP and Vista are very good about not loading drivers for hardware that isn't installed.

I've used the same hard drive across several different motherboards with no slowness due to "bad drivers". It may not run the best on the first boot, but Windows is auto loading the drivers it knows will work. At that point you generally need to manually add the sound, video, chipset, etc. I even took a Vista OS disk from an AMD platform with an Nvidia chipset and put it in a C2D system with an Intel chipset and after installing the drivers and rebooting, it was in perfect shape.

Right click My Computer and select properties. Then go to the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button. Do you see a lot of exclamation points? Those are the devices that don't have drivers.

You shouldn't NEED to reinstall Windows at all. This is a mentality from the 9x era. XP, and especially Vista, are darn near bullet proof in this regard. The only instance I have issues with is when RAID is involved. I still haven't found a good way to load RAID drivers without reinstall or massive system instability.

What HDD are you putting in there? Might be a jumper setting keeping things from happening. Also, your controller might not be compatible with your HDD interface.
