I've got this strange error message every time I reboot. I'm running XP Pro SP3. I wish I had documented when this occurred, after what install or update, but I didn't. I do remember having a problem updating MS Office 2003 not long ago, could it have something to do with a MS update?

Anyway here's the error window:

FAIL.jpg

Is there any way to track this in Processes? It shows up in Applications as "FAIL".

Any help as how I can track this error back to it source would be greatly appreciated.

I would think event viewer>application in administrative tools should show something on it.Just double click the suspect log entries if its not obvious what app is causing it.

Since there is no error code, I wouldn't rule out spyware/virii.

Search the registry for InstallLocation... Start | Run | Type regedit, and click OK | Make sure all of the branches are collapsed, and highlight "Computer" | Hit Ctrl+F, and type InstallLocation in the "Find what" field | After an entry is found, make a note of the assigned key and Value name | Hit F3 to "Find next", and continue searching for any keys / sub-keys / Value data that might signal the "Fail" dialog.

Searching the registry for 'InstallLocation' it's in dozens of locations for dozens of applications. My statups looked ok. There are two entries in the Events that appear together and are identified as missing: 'gupdate1c96628c846d9c2' and 'gusvc'. Both are ID 0. The first one is associated with Google apps, I'm not sure what the second one is, probably part of Google.

I'll uninstall Google apps when I get home and see if that fixes it.

Run Hijackthis and generate a log file. Do not "fix" anything with it - just run a scan and post the logfile here. I can tell you which startup items need "fixed" for this message to go away.

Well, your HJT log is a mess... You have a ton of stuff running. Start there by checkmarking every line that says (file missing), then clicking on the fix button. Reboot and check if your still getting the error message.

An easier way to find out what process the window belongs to is to open task manager and arrange processes by CPU usage. Click on the title of the error window and shake it. Seriously.

When shaking the window, one of the processes in task manager will rise to the top. Keep shaking until its apparent which process it belongs to, then we just have to disable that process from starting up to get rid of the error.

UPDATE: Solved

Well after all this time, after having replaced that particular boot drive. I found myself reinstalling it due to the new drive getting fried by another CRAPPY Antec PooPower PSU. So I had to deal with this pesky InstallLocation error again. That drive had a myriad of other file system issues, which prompted me to replace it in the first place, so I had a bit of work ahead of me.

After I was able to get the file system stable again, had tons of paging errors (got rid of over 8GB of temp files--my wife's computer.) I went though msconfig to begin the process of elimination with a clean boot, then turning on one process & startup item at a time. Well actually I did it in pairs of processes & startup items.

With everything disabled the "FAIL: InstallLocation" error was gone. As I began to turn on processes & startup items I'd get a few errors here and there, usually due to fact that that I turned on something that needed something else that was turn off. So far so good, no "FAIL..." error and the PC felt healthy and zippy.

Then it happened, probably 3/4 down the list of processes.

FAIL: InstallLocation

Cool, all I had to do was turn off 1 of 4 things that I think is the culprit. And I was correct. And the winner is:

O23 - Service: MagicTuneEngine - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\MagicTune Premium\MagicTuneEngine.exe

MagicTune Engine is part of Samsung's MagicTune Premium suite, which came with my wife's monitor. There's no uninstaller for it, so for now I'm just leaving it turned off until I totally remove it.

Now if I could only sue Antec for making totally crappy PSUs and get them to pay for the drives their lousy PSUs burned out, I'd be happy.

Thanks, MotzKopf. The same alert appeared on my XP system after I installed a new Samsung monitor. Disabling MagicTuneEngine did the trick.
