Hello... I havent gotten a new pc in about 5 years and am
planning on building a new one myself.

i've decided to go the i7 route, can anyone recommend
what i can get for about $1400?
(planning on OCing)

Thanks in advance.

For $1400 your options are wide open.

What will you be using the new computer for? Will help determine how much to set aside for avideo card, memory, etc.

I would get the i7 920, 6Gb ram (good brand such as g.skill / OCZ) 1600Mhz for overclocking, GTX285 and Asus P6T. But as I am in the UK, I can not say how much this will be costing. Is this US $ AUS $ ?

Not a bad choice. Go with the i7 920 for sure (best value) the 940 isn't much better to justify the $200 increase. As always ASUS is a good brand of Motherboard to go with. The P6T runs for $250 and the Deluxe edition runs around $300. If you wanna spend an extra $80-100 the ASUS Rampage II Extreme isn't a bad choice either. There are also about 20+ other socket 1366 Motherboards available on newegg.com. Hard drive isn't hard. Just determine how much space you need and any 7200 RPM HD by a major brand is hard to mess up. Go 10,000 RPM if you have the extra money but be prepared to shell out more money for less space. If you don't want to drop $400+ for a GTX295 or 285 you can get the 9800GTX+ for around $150-200 or go a step above with the 9800GX2 (dual GPU). 6 GB of RAM is defiantly a good choice with Windows Vista Ultimate OS. DDR3 1600 - 1800 MHz is the some of the fastest memory available and the i7 and socket 1366 MotherBoard are prefect for the job. If you need a case the Antec 1200 is an extremely efficient air cooled case but runs a bit expensive at around $200. The Antec 900 is not a bad alternative.

-i7 920
-Gigabyte x58 mobo
-6G ram
-Xigmatek HDT-S1283 Cooler
-GTX295 Video card
-2 x 1Tb drives
-Corsair 1000HX (for eventual dual GTX295)
-Nice case...

Don't get the asus p6t. Every benchmark I've seen on hwbot.org who uses the Asus board is low from where it should be...

Get the Evga. It's currently the best board out. The Evga x58 Classified will be the best board, but that will be out of your price range (~$450)

This i7 setup in my sig was just put together two days ago 1640 Shipped from newegg!! thats without the O/S, mouse, monitor and keyboard!!

Just to let you know I went cheap on the ram and HDD's to be able to go big on the Vid card!! the ram was $79 and the HDD's were $70 total. I just play games and not much else cept for the DVD burn every now and then.

920 $300
X58 of your choice ~$250
4870x2 $300
PSU $150
6gb DDR ~$150
HDD~$100

Well for the rest of your money? Spend them wisely :)
