Little help testing 4850...

Hey guys, been a while since I've been here but was hoping I could get a little assistance.

Trying to be a little cheap I just got a Powercolor 4850 1GB from newegg as an open box buy for $130. I'm running a 24in monitor so I thought the 1GB might be worth grabbing since I like playing at higher resolutions.

At any rate my question is: What would you do to verify that you had a fully functional and working card? What specific tests or examination would you put it through? NE only gives a 15 day return policy so I need to jump on checking this thing out right away.

Thanks in advance for any help.

i'm no expert by any means but i think ppl would suggest running ATITool and use the test included. you can also use any of those 3D* test and compare it to the results already found such as those on tomshardware.com if you get results similar then it should be good. not sure if you're CPU will have an effect on some scores though it might.

Thanks! Yeah, I'll give those a shot. I got the card today and their doesn't appear to be anything physically wrong with it, so when I get home tonight I'll install and give it a run through what you are suggesting.

Yeah I was wondering also what kind of effect my CPU is going to have on it. I am guessing I will be limiting it somewhat, I am running an Opteron 144 oc'd to 2.5 at the moment. I've had it over 2.8 but I stepped it back a while ago since I wasn't really using the extra performance or gaming or anything. Kind of wanting to play some of the newer games out now though. Any way I can guesstimate what kind of performance hit this older system might make on normal 4850 performance?

Bench the hell out of it. I think the Fur rendering bench is supposed to be a pretty good stress test.

Yes, the Opty will limit you somewhat, but it'll still be a great upgrade for you, assuming it's from the 1900xt in your sig

Yep, still running the 1900 so... awesome that is good news! I hadn't heard of Fur, I'll definitely give that a shot. Thanks for the advice.
