I plan to do the same as mr.max-amd. My 9800GT does great for most all things, but I would love to upgrade to the next gen when the prices come down.

What do you mean last? High mzh dual cores and 9800GT's are still pretty high up there. As far as running things on max settings some of the newest and best cards can barely hang with that. I'll be keeping my 8800GT for a few years or until the slot it's in goes away like AGP did. If AGP was still on the 775 board I'd be running my 9800 Pro.

without adding voltage I got it up to 3400 but I only tested for prime stability for about 20 minutes. My HT link was running at 1000 the whole time too until i realized it once i got up into the higher clock range.

good stuff man do you race them or just ride for fun? used to race but one to many injuries has caused me to slow down a little.

im planning on an AM3 quad and some new nvidia card or possibly a ati xfire setup (4870's are mad cheap )
i think that 8800gt/dual core would last well into 2010 for most games

The 8800GT's, i mean 9800GT's should last for a while depending on what type of gaming resolution/settings you like in said games. Dual core, as well it all depends on what you do to justify using it or upgrading.

Me I loved my dual core, she was great little chip. Only reason why I decided to get the setup I have currently is because the board died, and needed something to hold over til repaired so said forget it im upgrading. So its a win win in my case but those should last quiet a while, unless you demand the best of the best all the time.

Strictly in terms of gaming, I plan not to upgrade my system until every other game chokes on my setup and is unable to play at about 1280x720. My native is 1680x1050, but at 720 I don't believe the image quality suffers much.

I play at my max res most of the time 1152x864. The 8800gt holds off perfectly, and I've seen most of the games coming this year and I don't see why the 8800gts won't hold off, mine runs everything at more than 60FPS in the majority of games, the only choker is Crysis which runs at some 25-35FPS but Crysis is very playable at that speed so... no demanding games, no need to upgrade card. BTW the games coming this year are a lot of RPGs and RTS, I would say a Quad upgrade & switch to 4 GB of RAM in 2009 will be required to survive.

It will last a while really. There are only a few games taht can use more than 1 core out currently. And SLI 9800gt are decent cards. You should have at least a year or two before they really start showing their age.

If the RTS or RPG's take to using the Quad cores then yes quad will be a good thing but so few use it currently unless its your primary game its basically pointless just from that aspect.

4Gigs of ram and 64-bit yes I could see that for an upgrade but if you got a CPU in the last few years you can run a 64-bit OS and ram well if you got 2 gigs spend $50 and get 4. Rams so cheap now adays I wouldn't even consider it an "upgrade" per say.

becuase not everyone needs to buy a new CPU and ram for a rig.....they are happy with what they have but maybe need some more umf in their video...

with a 4670, an old P4 could easily play HD content... or an old 754 cpu...

Depends entirely on rez. If someone is runnin an E8400 with a 8800 or 9800 @ 1280x800 then it would last a very considerable amount of time I'm sure.

On the other hand, If the same person is running the same rig on 2 monitors both @ 1680x1050 then they are probably already considering an upgrade on the video side of things.
