Maybe I am missing something here...if so, Im sorry.

1. I never heard of any 40Gb raptors......There was/is 74gb/150gb/300GB
2. I assume you are rounding up....for some reason on your second choice option.

EDIT: Ok, wait the only 36Gb raptors..... aha ha!

Ok here is what I would do. Most any new 32mb cache drive is going to beat out the old raptors (36gb/74gb 16 mb cache). Dont worry about those.

I would get one Velociraptor, one WD Caviar Black for backups/storage.

EDIT2: wow...

There are no 74GB Velociraptors.... they are 150gb and 300GB respectively.

I stand corrected. I have only used the noisy old ones.

R7

HDtaching an old raptor sounds like dropping beads into a metal shute. Hdtaching a new VR sounds like the same situation except you use sand and you've got a blanket on the outside of the shute. It's smaller noise, and it's muffled.

Actually, therei s.

maybe your case fans are loud? :santa:
you'd get the most storage out of 1 40gb raptor and a 1tb storage drive.
most performance out of either the 2nd or 3rd choice.

how about 2 WD 640GB blacks in raid 0? that's a lot faster than one single velociraptor

My RaptorX I can hear over my case fans..(low)...

Man, I must be a stickler for accuracy. I borderline harass one member b/c he had impossible clockspeeds fora PGU in his sig, and here I am bugging out over the 40GB and 80GB raptors!!!!

There are 36,74,80(Dell OEM),150 and 160(Dell OEM)GB Raptors.

There are 74, 80(Dell OEM), 150, 160(Dell OEM) and 300GB VelociRaptors.

Get a VelociRaptor and a WD black for storage.
