Question Vista Home won't boot-up??

I think I have a boot sector issue. The system will just hang until it goes to the recovery screen. Then asks if I want to try the Start-up Repair. I did so three times. It never worked today at all. Then we got to a screen with 5 choices.
Recovery / Start-up Repair / System Restore / Command Prompt and another.
I did the system restore and it worked.
-What is the best way to back up Vista 100%?
-I defrag this thing constantly 2x per week. I've noticed it's getting hung at 40% complete now always. I use Disk Keeper.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
