Quick question about PCI-e Plugs...

Two questions actually:

I have an Antec TruePower TruePower 2.0 550w with two 6 pin PCI-e connections on it. I have been running a 7800gt for the last 3 years with this supply and it has been great! Will this be able to handle the new gtx285 and a phenom II quad core or is it time to upgrade?

Also, the supply I have been looking at upgrading to (CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX) has two 2x6 pin PCI-e plugs while the gtx285 needs two 6 pin plugs... will this work with two pins on each going unused?

Thanks for the help guys, it has been about 3 years since I have touched my computer and it is time for an upgrade!

Current Specs:

AMD 64 x2 3800+ @2.4 ghz (liquid cooled)
DFI SLI-D nforce4 motherboard
1 gb gSkill (2x512) ram 2-2-2-5
evga 7800gt CO edition @stock speeds
74gb raptor hd
80 wd caviar hd
Thermaltake Tsunami

if you dont plan to go sli your psu would be more then enough for that setup.... yes the extra pins that would make 8pin can be left off with no problem. the only thing i would worry about, as i cant really recall if it was the TP line. i know one of them awhile back was reported to have the caps degraded after 1-3 years, right around there. if you wanted to play it safe get the Corsair PSU....

I assume you meant 8-pin PCI-e plugs...

Anyways, 8-pin plugs usually can't directly plug in to a 6-pin slot. You need to use an 8-to-6-pin adapter. Good news, though; power supply manufacturers usually include as many of those adapters as they have 8-pin plugs in their retail kits. So you should be fine with the upgrade

Evil,

I think that's one of them, the whole Smart Power and True Power model line. He's lucky.

You want to build a very nice system, get a new power supply. That Corsair is a good one.

Here's Diaz's list, pick anything from it and shop around:

Thanks for the feedback guys! I would like to give my current PSU a shot before spending another 100 bucks on a new one. Are there any certain signs of failure that I should look for if I put in into a new rig? If there is something I could look for to see if it is performing ok so that I can be proactive and get a new PSU if the current one is not holding up?

Sure is:

Check your capacitors, see if they are bulged or leaking on the top. They should be perfectly flat on top with no discoloration. If they are purple in color, they are the ones in question. If there is any indication they look like the photo, time for a new power supply.

You can see them through your back screen or through the fan opening with a good light. Check them carefully.

Thank you, I will take a peek at those when I tear down the computer. Go figure, I just had the whole thing apart a few days ago getting all the dust out and cleaning the fans on the cards/case/mobo etc.

Don't forget to clean the dust out of the power supply.
