I dont think this thread violates any forum rules, as I'm not downloading pirated software or stealing anything.

Anyway, Ive been reading online about all of the Linux mods for the original xbox, and as I dont use mine anymore I thought I'd mess around with it. I was able to splice a controller cord into a usb port, since the xbox controller ports are nothing more than usb with a different connector.

Anyhow, I got my xbox to pick up my usb flash drive, and the MS dashboard recognizes it. Is there any other way to run the linux files other than with a game hack such as splinter cell? because I cant get the saved game files from my computer to the xbox, because the xbox auto formats the flash drive.

The people online that I read are using the action replay software for the xbox, but I dont have it, and i'm not really interested in trying to find it.

If anyone has any interesting ideas lol...Its not that important, I just thought it would be fun since I dont use the old girl anymore.

Hey you are off to a good start! I havent tried it myself but I have heard of people putting linux on xbox's more specifically difrent distrobutions of ubuntu, like mithbuntu for one you can use for some kind of media center. havent looked into it much but would love to see what everyone else has to say too!

I accually didnt know the 360's had a diffrent style plug either untill I bought one for my PC (not the made for windows one either for 30$ more LOL) but it accually came with an adapter. :)

is it worth it? depends on what you want to use it for. considering its basically a p3 with 64mb ram, it can't do much. if you want it for a media center, you'd be much better off just using xbmc on it. If you just want it as a hobby; an extra box to screw around with linux on, then it's great. i was able to get DSL and gentoo working but couldn't get any of the others for some reason.

These have been invaluable to me.

Once you do get the basic dashboard on there you can pretty much put whatever you'd like via a bootable CD listed above. Getting the new dash on there is far easier via the game hacks like 007, Mechassault, or Splinter Cell and the action replay software. They are not really that hard to find.

I got my game copy for a few bucks: http://www.estarland.com/index.asp?page=XBox&cat=AA&product=6036&q=

Just make sure you get an original game disk. The later titles and platinum editions will not work. Also the 007 hack needs an original saved game to work, while the other two don't want you to have any saved games on there. So start 007, play until the cutscene starts, quit and save it, then run the installer. I spent half a day trying to figure out why it would not work until I found that tidbit in a rare install guide. ;) Once the new dash is installed and you boot from the CD image, you can pretty much update, change, move or install things via FTP from your PC.

I use mine strictly for XBMC use (I have 2 modded now) and they have been awesome. Tried a built in install of Linux that came on the Cd and it worked great. Wish I had modded them years ago. Currently in the process of making them both silent (with the help of a friend) by replacing the fans, putting in better cooling and swapping hard drives for more quiet ones.

Also recommend the DVD kit for remote use of XBMC if you install it: http://www.google.com/products?q=Xbox+DVD+kit&hl=en

It really is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. ;) I hope you do find the few things you need to get started. Wish you luck.
