8800GT for dedicated PhysX???

After deciding against getting another 8800Gt to sli in my rig I've decided to get a GTX 260 core 216 instead. I was thinking I could use my old 8800GT as a dedicated PhysX card. Has anyone tried this? If so, is it the best way to set it up or should I just remove the 8800GT and use the 260 for PhysX?

Just try setting it up for dedicated PhysX, and see if helps in your PhysX enabled games. I think it would help since it takes some load off of the GTX 260, I say just try and see.

If you're using Vista you might have to connect a DVI between your 8800GT and monitor as well as one between your GTX 260 and monitor. Drivers might have fixed this issue, but I'm not sure.

I sure hope not as my monitors only have one DVI port and one VGA. lol

Sorry about that, one DVI and one VGA should work as well. Wasn't too clear...

Hopefully drivers have fixed it anyway...

I used my 8800GTS-512 as a dedicated physx card w/ my GTX280 as the main. No need to connect any monitor cables to the physx card. 1 DVI from my 280 to the monitor worked fine. I did have to reinstall the drivers, though.

I don't really have any physx games, but when I get Mirror's Edge I will probably re-install it. I took it out b/c all it did was make my entire rig run hotter. No advantage in the games that I play that I could see. My 280 pulls double-duty for now.

physx isn't that wonderful thing they want us to believe. take crysis physics for example
they aren't realistic as in physx but they still do the job and are not so demanding.

Nvidia has to face it, physx is not super needed in todays games

I think it can be used very effectively, but it takes some dedication on the developers part. So far Mirror's Edge is the only game I know off the top of my head that is worth playing (haven't played it, but want to) and also uses Physx well.

If you have an extra gfx card lying around and have a supported game then why not try it?

The main problem w/ Physx is that it is nVidia exclusive. It's hard to convince a developer who wants to get their game into as many hands as possible that they have to use a proprietary technology that might limit their customer base.

Well I'm a big nVidia fan, but I was wondering if Ati plans to support a PhysX system??

Was also wondering if it's best to turn off PhysX when running 3dmark? i'm sure I've read you get a more reliable score if Physx is off.

Nvidia will regret the day they bought physx,it will never take off.Sure a few games have used it..mirrors edge really only had a few moments where it was utilized, that i remember anyway.I cant see many pc game developers jumping on the bandwagon, divides too much of the gamer market and havok works just fine imo.

I've got an 8800 gt running physx along side my gtx260. I haven't noticed anything in mirror's edge. I did try running it one time without the 8800gt and with physx on the gtx and man, as soon as the bullets started flying I dropped to 8fps. For the price of an 8800gt, it's hard to say it's a bad buy and if physx flops, then you have one more card to fold with.

If you dip to 8fps something is wrong with your setup.... I run a GTX 260 216 and I have PhysX enabled, I see no dips that low, especially when bullets are flying around. Love the effects

Not less reliable...just lower. LOL!

It's a benchmark. The idea is to get as high a score as possible. People use all kinds of tweaks to get their score up there.

If it was that big a deal I'm sure Futuremark could release a patch to 'fix' it.

I've read some posts that say the score doesn't count or something. I'm not sure how that works, but futuremark has accepted and saved all my runs w/ Physx run on the GPU. Maybe is doesn't count in contests or something...not really sure.

Video-encoding can be done faster on the GPU than it can on the CPU. Does that mean we shouldn't use it?

Found a XFX 8800GT Alpha dog on ebay going cheap so it's now on route to me now. Two 8800GT's will have to do till I save up for a i7 rig.
