Hello there :)

I have an old Dell here that I had lying in work (Faulty PSU)

The Board is a Dell 0CT103 A03 (Nforce 410/430 mcp ?? ) Rev : A2

The plan now is to make it into a budget gamer if possible.

Can you tell me if it would take something like a :

AMD Athlon 64 X2 7850 BlackEdition, AM2+, DualCore, 2.8GHz, 3MB Cache,95W

4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2, PC2-8500 (1066), 240Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 5-5-5-15, EPP

And maybe a 4870 Graphics card

I have installed a new PSU (Gigabyte Superb 550W PSU GE-P450N-C2)

I have not build a computer in a few years now, so I am well out of touch, any help would be great :)

Definite no go on the CPU. It only supports up through the X2 6000+ from what I can tell. (And probably only the 89W version, not the 125W.) No K10 chips at all.

Still though, a 5600 Brisbane is only $60 (in the US, at least), should probably be better than what's in there now. More RAM is always a good thing. A 4870 might be a bit limited by the CPU, but a 4770 would probably be a good match.

Cheers for the fast reply, pitty about the CPU :) I was probably expecting too much from an old machine :)

Im sure a 5600+ would be a good boost from the 3800 currently in the machine. What is the 4770's like, good?

I know so little about recent hardware its not funny :)

Thanks again

Edit :

Oh I should add that it probably wont be heavy gaming, just mainly racing sims, we are gonna link the computer up to a HD Tv and maybe a steering wheel, that kinda stuff.

What is the 4770's like, good?

The 4770 is just below the 4850, can even match it in some things. It's a good midrange card, well-suited for a budget gaming machine. I don't know how it is in Ireland, but the 4770 is around $90 here, sometimes a bit cheaper depending on sale prices. 4850s can be had sometimes for similar prices, so it's sort of a toss-up which to go for, given equal prices. I'd personally go for the 4770 due to the lower power consumption.

Thanks again, great advise.

I have to spend less than I first thought to make it a decent machine. The 4770 sounds great, I have been reading a little on the reviews, great value.

So the 5600 cpu and the 4770 gpu, and the 4gb of ram, it should do alright, cheers

Ok one more question, my local store has a 5600+, how can I tell if its a brisbane.

Here are the specs on their site :

Processor AMD Athlon™ X2 Dual-Core

Again thanks in advance

that's a windor
Birsbane's are 65nmSOI, and a different revision name

Yeah, that one on eBay is good. An 89W Windsor 5600 should work fine as well, as long as you have a heatsink that will support it. I think that model Dell came with two different heatsinks, one for 65W CPUs and a heftier one for 89W.

Looks like I am gonna need you guys help again here, it seems a brisbane 5600 is harder come by in this part of the world :( The ebay one is an American company.

So I will go with the 5600 Windsor from the local store. Here are pics of the cpu an Heatsink. Any reason why the Windsor wouldnt work?

Cheers again

Actually the Windsor core 5600 is probably the best bet. That is the motherboard from the E521, which came from Dell with up to the 5600 Windsor. There is no BIOS update for the G1 and G2 stepping Brisbane core processors. I have heard both that they do and do not work. The Dell heatsink is rated for 89 watts.

Yep E521 is right :) Dell 0CT103 A03 (Nforce 410/430 mcp ?? ) Rev : A2, that is the numbers I got for the board with cpu-z

Will buy the 5600 windsor and see how it works out tomorrow

Is there a fail safe way to work out if the 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2, PC2-8500 (1066) will work on that board?

Many thanks

If it'll run at 1.8V, it'll run on that board. You won't be able to do 1066 speeds, probably just 800 (or 667, or whatever is the max it supports), but that's not a big deal.

Dell shows support for up to 1 GB per slot. As Old Thrashbarg stated you will need RAM that will run at 1.8v.

Yeah, luckily I checked on corsairs website and the only compatible memory showing was sticks of VS1GB533D2

So I ordered 4, they will be here tomorrow. I have the new CPU (5600 Windsor) and still need to decide on which 4770, any ideas? Might go with XFX.

I done a 3dmark05 score so I could see how big a performance increase with the new bits, the system got a huge score of 1545 lol, I thought it would be low but not that terrible.

Irish, did you end up going with the Windsor and how did it work out? I have the same board and thinking of dropping in this one.

Heard that windsor would be a better fit but not so sure about that.

Thanks

Hi there, the windsor fitted perfect for me, exact size of the old cpu. So fitting was easy.

The computer is now flying, I added the 5600 windsor, 4x 1gb of the corsair value ram and the hd4770 (Just fits, bit tight), and the system now flys. 3dmark05 score has went from 1545 to 15003 lol, just a slight jump :)

Thanks I am really glad to hear this. I changed my mind on the Brisbane from Newegg and picked up a Windsor from eBay. 5600+ like you. I'll be going from a single core 3800+ to a DC 5600+. This thing should smoke. Thanks again.

Well ... got it in and am very happy!! Went from a single core 3800+ to the dual core 5600+. What a difference. Glad I came accross this thread. Thanks Irelandmadman!
