Newbie i7 owner--o/c questions.

Hi everyone. I'm very new to overclocking (never done it). I've read a lot of articles out there on how to do it and have a few questions. I think I'm getting confused by all the information out there and was hoping someone could help me through it. I'd like to see what my processor can do on stock, and then go from there.

I have seen some people that use "X.M.P." in the Ai overclock tuner, then some changing the tuner to "manual." What is the difference between the two? And which should I use?

I know in order to overclock I'll need to change the AI overclock tuner to "manual" or "X.M.P.". Do I manually change the cpu volts to 1.2 (stock)? From there do I just raise the BCLK until it is unstable (by testing with prime 95)?

I also read to drop the memory multiplier down to 6, but I can't find that in the bios, could someone tell me where that is?

I'd like to keep speed step on so it isn't always running hot. I read to disable turbo mode for stability. I also read to disable c-state, and c1e support, but couldn't find it in the bios. Could someone point me to this, and tell me if I'm supposed to be disabling anything else? Thanks. =]

For some reason I couldn't find where the cpu multiplier (x20) is in the bios. Am I supposed to disable a setting to be able to see this?

I'm using a core i7 920 process (D0) stepping. ASUS P6T motherboard. 6 gigs G Skill RAM, WD6401AALS, Xigmatek Dark Knight, Antec EA 650 psu.

Sorry, I must sound completely terrible at overclocking, which I am. I'd just like to try to get as much as I can out of this and heard you guys were very good at overclocking. Thanks for the help in advance!

dont use xmp just leave it at manual

set the volts to 1.2 and start raising the block and prime to find the highest clock possible with 1.2 volts then take it a little higher like 1.25 and do the same untill your temps are to high to go any futher.. 90-95c is the highest you should go check temps with realtemp

your motherboard wont give you multipliers instead it will give you the actuall speed of the memory

disable c1e and eist while your finding your highest oc then enablethem when your done if you want to keep the speedstep option and all those options are in the cpu config or something like that dont really remember

and once you set the ai oc to manual you will see the option for cpu multi just type in 20 in there or what ever multi you want to try

Um i leave my cpu voltage on to auto and just increase the bclk, it will automatically increase the voltage. or is that wrong way to do it? im running 195 bclk stable with all my games and 3dmark, but i havent run prime yet.

you can leave it on auto but it will over volt your cpu like crazy check cpu-z i bet your voltage is atleast over 1.4 under load when you probably only need like 1.25 or something

I never let the mobo control voltage, while I haven't used this mobo, I find they tend to give them way too much voltage.

Personally, I'm kinda anal and before I start with the actual OC I undervolt as low as it can go while remaining stable. I then start to OC from that value because i like to know where my baseline is.

Truth is on a 920 you can easily get to 3.2ghz+ before needing to add anything to stock voltage (vid).

do you guys have a D0 stepping?? because my D0 does 4.0 with HT with only 1.23 volts and 1.2 is stock so you should try to oc as high as you can with your cpu at 1.2 qpi at 1.2 and ioh at 1.2 stock ioh is 1.1 but i need 1.2 to get 4.0 stable

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to try it out today.

So what I'm going to do is set the tuner to manual. Change the cpu volts to 1.2, qpi to 1.2, and ioh to 1.2. Disable c1e and EIST. And then raise the BLCK? I don't have to mess around with the RAM settings or anything else at all? I just leave the other stuff on 'auto?'

Yeah, about my posts. I didn't even know I had an account until I tried to re-register yesterday. I don't even remember making that post!
