Video card fried?

First of all this is about the gaming rig in my sig. It was/is oced to 4ghz not really sure all the specifics anymore. The video card was never overclocked.

Well i had this problem intermittently for awhile now, when i hit the power button i get 1 long beep followed by 3 short... which is a memory problem with AMI. I tried moving my memory around and resetting my bios. still beeeep-beepbeepbeep....

The computer seems to boot (I can hear windows loading) but i have no screen.... is my video card fried? If so what would a good CHEAP replacement be. I would like similar if not better performance for little coin.

A cheap replacement would be a, GTS 250, 9800GTX or 8800GT. All based on the G92 GPU. If your 8800GTS was either 320mb or 640mb all the above cards will be a bit faster too. Can you get your hands on another card just to test to see if your card is fried?

You could always try this to see if you can bring the card back to life: http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.p...ght=oven+trick

I used to have a backup but gave it to a friend in need...

I may just try the oven trick.. who know it might work.

I would try lend a card off a friend first just to make sure the problem is with your card.

Best plan

I was having similar fun the other week and it was down to a bios thing http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=608259

so if you can another machine to test stuff on is a real winner.

The bleep code sounds exactly like when the video fails to init with an Award BIOS, but I have the feeling that the AMI BIOS of today is pretty much the same.

Does it only happen when turning it on after being off for some hours?

Or maybe try your card in a friends machine?? Just to take the card out of the equation.

Yes and no. I don't game very often so this computer may be powered down for a week or more (typically more). I can't remember it ever happening when restarting the computer only when it was shutdown for an extended period of time.

Well I think I am going to purchase a newer card and RMA my old one. Worst case scenario is I end up with an extra card. I have done a little bit of looking around and this is what i came up with:

EVGA 9800GT 512MB ~$100
EVGA GTS 250 512MB ~$115

The my 8800gts is a 320MB version so I think either way I coming out ahead. What do you guys think.

+1 for the GTS 250, But if I was you I would consider a GTX 260 core 216. The performance jump is well worth the extra cash.

Could it be my power supply? The error code starts just when the fan on the video card starts to spin. I was thinking that maybe the video card is drawing too much for the psu and causing the memory to fault... just a thought..

Also will my psu handle a GTS250? GTX260?

Yes. It'll run w/ only 320MB, though.
