extreme crossfire

in theory could you crossfire four 4870x2's for 8 way X-fire? assuming you had a lot of money of course.

its only:

now if only i could spare that money on an entire system let alone gfx and mobo. (i'm only 16)

I think its possible, however I think some motherboards would limit it, to like all 8x instead of 16x, or maybe 2 16x and 2 8x. Or something, depending on your motherboard. My motherboard is capable of quad crossfire, but ill probably never ever get around to doing that. Since instead of buying more 4890s id probably just go for a 5000 series.

I think having 4 x 4870x2s would be a waste. If it is possible, nothing is really gonna need that much power. And the heat generation I don't even want to think about. Also you would probably have to do a pretty heavy overclock on the CPU to keep up with all that.

Currently both crossfire and SLI are limited to 4 GPU's , there is something called hydra or something like that , basically suppose to change that soon .

im sure it is possible but a amd cpu wouldnt be able to handle the load you would be bottle necked with the first one alone lol

Hydra will offer perfect scaling. 2 GPUs are twice as fast 1 GPU. 3 GPUs are three times as fast as 1 GPU etc.

Oh it's on :P. lol *waits for this thread to turn into an intel vs amd flame* hahahaha. =D. But realistically that's not true and you know it . Most of the newer ones wouldn't bottleneck a single 4870x2 -_-. Even two of them, (i.e. more then 945/955 models here). But ya, So ner lol.

Anyway, at the OP: like someone mentioned, it just wouldn't be worth it :\. Personally I think the cards today are more than sufficient for games to come for years, but it's the software, (including drivers), that causes a limit, i.e. maybe only a high portion of the hardware is actually being properly utilized, where there's still theoretically more power to be had from todays GPU's, which is 'bottlenecked' thanks to software/drivers and the actual transition of information between the software/game and the GPU etc. That's what I think anyway... Feel free to slap me if I'm wrong XD
