I tried using remote desktop and giving him my IP but it didn't work.

I'm not on a network or anything, and he won't be watching me do any 3d gaming or anything.

I have Vista 64 and he has Vista too. What's involved in this?

What option did you select when you installed it?
 
could also try yuuguu. works as an addon/rider program to multiple IM clients (uses your SN/IM session) to share desktops. Works great, if not the speediest solution.
 
LogMeIn free is the best and easiest. Beats having to pay annually or screw around with noname brand software.
 
Try showmypc. You don't have to register or sign in, just run their client, get the other person to run the client, and give them your share password.
