Project: Rackmount Underkill

Yes that pun was intended! Thideras has been giving me a hand with the dell 5i stuff and I've decided to build a renderbox. Basically a renderbox sits on the network and waits for a job to be sent, that job could consist of rendering a 3d scene or rendering a movie. This box will also double as my fileserver, I'm going to keep all the software installers for lan partys on the 15k array.

SpeC's:
Board: Tyan K8HM - Dual Socket 940 Motherboard
Memory: 8x1Gb ddr400 ECC HP
CPU's: 2x AMD Opteron 280 2.4ghz Dual Core's
Storage1: 6x 320gb Maxtor Diamondmax something.. They are not super fast but have a excellent track record for longevity.
Storage2: 5x 72gb 15,000RPM SCSI
Controller1: Dell Perc 5i Raid Controller 256Mb Cache
Controller2: HP 641 U320 Scsi raid controller 256Mb Cache
Case: Norco something something.. I've had it a while.
PSU: Corsair tx750, got it cheap from a guy at XS.
Hotswap Bay: Supermicro, Its a u320 scsi hot swap bay.. have not ordered it yet.

Enuff with my jabberwalky! On with the pictures!

Quick Getto test of the cpus... waiting on heatsinks!

Got 2 Rosewill heatsinks from newegg on a killer shellshocker deal, 2x 940 heatsinks for 20$ shipped, they appear to be re-labeled arctic cooling..

Modified the corsair cables for my needs.

Just waiting on the perc 5i to show up and a few other things.. then its waiting on more money to buy more goodies! I've been buying like crazy on ebay recently.

I am at once appalled at the electricity usage, and envious of the horsepower.

lol, boards only 60$ on ebay. Just search Tyan K8HM Processors are a little pricey unless you get a killer deal. I got both 280s for $80 Shipped. I wanted 285s but they are kinda rare yet.

I'm very happy with how its turning out, I think i'm going to sleeve everything else just for the fun of it.

Guessing it is either the 450 or maybe the 470 but it may be a different model depending on age.

Its doing great! Most reliable computer in the house, It needs a UPS though.. seems like even tiny power flickers will drop it.. I'd like to upgrade the hard drives to dual 2.5" 500gb sata. Wanna hook me up?

Nice setup there. I was going to use my dually setup in my file server but the power bill wouldn't go well with that hehe. Where are those 72 Gig drives going to go? I assume you're using them in a backplane from another system? LMK if you need a nice PCI 64 SCSI RAID card. And benchmark those in a stripe!

The last shots are a cannon powershot a550 Point in shoot, macromode. It does very well for an older camera, I can't complain.

Your enclosure is SCSI?
