Q9550 with P5Q deluxe. seem to hit a wall.

ok i have been out of overclocking for a very long time so im not as good with bios settings as i once was see my rig in sig. well i sort of followed these settings http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.p...ighlight=q9550

im using latest bios.
but not for the ram mine is 5-5-5-15 vcore is 1.26 and it seems prime stable at 447x8.5
but thats my wall i can't go any higher. right now my room temp is 77f and the cpu at full load is 55c
i know my ram isnt the greatest so i have that set as low as the board will go. ill get 8gb of 1066 later when i upgrade to 64bit

so the question is im sure my bios isn't tweaked the best it could be so could someone with bios know how help me out please. what else can i do to my system to get the most i can out of it thanks everyone.

well i guess i didn't prime long enough so i kept turning down my fsb by 5 till the cpu was stable at 1.25v ended up at 425 for 3.6ghz kinda lower then what i expected out of this chip but i was able to up my ram to 5:6 ratio since the fsb was so low. the ram is doing great for only rated for 800 but i wish i can pump more juice out of this cpu. my sure it can do it i just need a little guidance.

I don't have my cheat sheets with me atm, but if I remember, it took more vcore and vdimm on my p45 system. If the temps would allow it, try kicking the voltage up.
Just a suggestion, instead of running prime right off the bat, try running one of the "cpu" tests on one of the 3dmark benchmark programs at first to reach a maximum fsb. Then run prime. If fails, back down. It's a lot quicker than just running prime.

im running more test right now. seems to be a FSB wall at 445. just 1 fsb over and prime quickly fails. it also doesn't like a lot of vcore. i originally had it at 1.25v and i thought temps were fine reading 55c range with asus probe.
i downloaded cpuid hardware monitor and it shows me the 4 temps of each core much higher then asus probe.
so im going off those temps and keeping it under 70c.

so at the moment i have it at 1.21v and 444fsb for 3774mhz still running prime. when i kept giving the cpu more voltage it didn't seem to help so instead of giving it more i gave it less lol down to 1.21v now and keeping it cool.

ill run more testing but this seems to be working. now the only question is all the stuff in bios im not sure about.

VCore does seem pretty low to me for pushing it that high, depends I guess, I've had luck turning down myself before.

I guess it's a matter of getting things stable first then upping things from there.

Depends on the chip I guess but should be able to go more than that easily.

Anything in the Bios thats on auto, if there are any, I'd set to at least a identical setting manually and save it for a base starting profile myself for starters.

You need to go at this systematically. Lower the CPU multi to 6 and keep the RAM loose w/ adequate voltage. Also ensure the RAM is 1:1 and NB timings are loose (tRD, and strap).

Then you can focus on getting the FSB as high as possible.

List all your BIOS settings and available options and it might be easier to help you.

honestly i ended up googling a lot of the defenitions of the ridiculous amount of settings my board has

i logged this stuff though, as i advanced

my 9550 c1 at 4.01 rock solid
v core was 1.38
pll at 1.75
dram@1.906
fsb 472x8.5

after i quick restart i could tell you some other settings, but that's all i wrote down

My EO settings. Pretty similar for my 3.8 nothing really changed.

Maybe 1.28 for the NB and FSBterm and 1.55 PLL. not sure but its really close to those.

My goal is to climp and keep my Vcore under 1.2 under load. ( currently 1.192 while priming )

Hope those settings can help you.

EDIT : ive read somewhere that the CPU MARGIN ENHANCEMENT need to be Performance Mode for Quads... True or False ? didnt tryed other settings

Your RAM is DDR2-800. Didn't catch that earlier. It may be limiting you. Try to find the limits of your RAM first.

Lower your FSB to ~400 (it should be plenty stable there), and use the different RAM dividers to push the RAM faster. You can play w/ the FSB speed to get finer control. During your testing you can try to give it more RAM voltage to see how it responds.

Post up a SS of CPU-Z's SPD tab.

These settings should help you push the RAM and FSB higher:

DRAM Static Read Control: disabled

DRAM Read Training: can't remember; experiment

Mem OC Charger: enabled

Ai Clock Twister: Strong and Stronger give better performance, but you may want to try moderate or weak for now.

Ai Transaction Booster: It's at 13 now, and that is plenty loose. Later you'll want to try something lower (tighter) for more performance, but for now leave it on auto or manually set it to 13 or 14.

CPU PLL: 1.55 -1.6v has always worked the best for me. Set it to 1.6v for now.

FSB Term: 1.2-1.35v has worked best for me. The higher the FSB the more you need, but too much can also lead to instability.

DRAM voltage: depends on your RAM. Experiment as outlined above.

NB Voltage: 1.2-1.35v has worked best for me. The higher the FSB the more you need, but too much can also lead to instability.

NB GTL: this made a huge difference for me on my FSB OC. You'll have to experiment, and once you adjust vNB or FSB Term you may have to go back and re-adjust. This is not an applied voltage, so feel free to try the whole range of options.

SB Voltage: It can sometimes help to add a little. I'm at 1.15v

PCIe Sata voltage: It can sometimes help to add a little. I'm at 1.55v

Wow, great info. I just got the 9550 too, and got up to 3.8 ghz withouut any walls. My memory is DDR3 1333 though, which I can underclock so it comes back to spec when I increase FSB.
OK, I lied. I hit a wall, but it is the temperature. With 1.28V two of the cores go over 60C under the stress tests, and I am not comfortable running the CPU at those temps, as a want a solid permanent solution, not to break a record. I will now try to go with a lower vcore, may be 1.25.

Interesting to see how your quest ends
