ID Softwares Rage :: New Screens!

Got some goodies to look at.

Brace yourself!

And yes this game will run fast its targeted for 60fps on the Xbox360 and PS3. So on the PC, speed wont be a problem so we can pump out all the fun it can render.

If your interested in the technically mumbo jumbo (like me) along with the screenshots this is a very very good read: http://s09.idav.ucdavis.edu/talks/05...Challenges.pdf

Reminds me of the UT3 screens that came out 2 or 3 years before the actual product that looks barely like them.

I think it will look on par with those screens. However I do know that Rage won't be uber amazing, its more gonna be really fast running, fluid gameplay, and just alot of fun with good graphics. But nothing out of the ordinary, until Doom4, which will be approx 3x detail of Rage. And apparently that will be the last game of this gen, and then they will be starting ID Tech 6 (A New Engine).

Coolest thing about rage is the unique ground textures, no more tile'ing! Good Old Megatexturing.

I remember those screens. You should keep in mind that they were mere examples of what the engine was capable of, not what was promised in UT3.

Hmm I don't remember what screens you are referring to, but the first time we see unreal engine 3 was in a video of what would be Gears of War and it looked pretty much like the game.

Do those clouds move or are they just a picture? They look a little too real

Maybe they're showing paintings like a lot of games do. Anybody see any pixels?

no, not paintings... if you read the pdf he linked in the first post they actually break down the texture mapping for you, pixel by pixel, surface by surface.

Tbh, Fallout3 is nothing special. Its old technology, the only thing that has changed between Oblivion and FO3 is that FO3 has different game art and missions.etc

But FO3 is a good game.

As for Rage, its not meant to be amazing game its meant to be a fun and fast game. However it does look pretty amazing, but I honestly dont think it looks that great, but it does look very very good. I think Doom4 is gonna give us the real kicks since that game is targeted at 30fps not 60fps like Rage. Having Doom4 targeted at 30fps will allow them to nearly cram 3x as much detail.

Fyi, Rage is a open world game. It has a large wasteland you can explore, and the texture for the ground is non-repeating. Theres no repeditive tiles, Rage or ID Tech5 engine pretty much has a single giant texture for the land, and then the asset textures, when your viewing ingame it pretty much renders only the textures you see.

But it takes it a step further, it also does something simular to LOD'ing for Geometry but for textures, if the texture (for example lets say a guys face) is 100 feet away from you, then it takes that texture and scales it or renders it at a low resolution so it doesn't take up power that it doesn't need too. And from that far away you can't tell the difference.

Rage uses OpenGL2.1/DirectX9 technology, and so will Doom4.
Then their next Engine ID Tech 6 will probably go on to the new stuff.

Rage will be released on, PC, Mac, Xbox360, PS3, and possibly Linux. Their engine builds all the releases at once so only a few modifications need to be made after and its ready to go. So no horrible porting jobs .

Oh and as for the clouds, from the looks of it to me its probably going to be a animated skybox, just multiple textures/images that gradually change depending on weather.etc, just like most other games. (except Crysis, were the clouds are volumetric, but then its hard to control a artistic style).

Something to keep in mind is ID screenshots typically don't look great... video captures on the other hand.

Id engines always look better in motion.
