Well I'm building a new system soon, (Next week to be exact) and i wont really use it for gaming until late September. Should i just get a 4870 now? Or wait for the 5000 series and just get a cheap card to hold me over?

This is a budget build, but I'm willing to spend 200$+ for a video card.

Will be using a Regor 240 processor, oc'd to 3.6-3.8GHZ

Not sure when the 5 series will be out, and then you really want to wait until Nvidia's series comes out so prices come down.

So, I would get a 4850/4870 now and then upgrade sometime next year to a 5 series or nvidia equivalent if you really need it.

Just remember, there probably wont be any DX11 games out for some time..

How about the HD 4890? Several models are in the $179(after MIR)-$199 range now.

I haven't seen any info on what kind of gains we'll see with the 5000 series over the 48x0 cards.

Meh, I'm running at 1280x1024 on a 17'' monitor, so i see no need in a 4890. Ill just grab a 4850/70 (Most likely 70) for the mean time and upgrade the CPU and GPU next summer. Thanks much! :D

I would invest in a cpu upgrade. At that res you could use a 4770/4850 and be fine.

lmao at that res there is no need for a 5xxx card instead of a monster gpu how about a cpu upgrade....

Thats not totally true. Sure at that res he could get away with a 4850, but would still need a 5xxx card if he wants DX11.

that and not to mension there are going to be low end 5 series cards too, not all of them are going to be faster than a 4890

So should i grab a 4850 for the time being and upgrade to the PII x2 550 with the extra 30$? Or stick with the Regor and get a 4870?
Also sometime in the near future i do plan on upgrading my monitor. (Something in the 21"+ range)

Alright, ill see what i can do.
Alright how does this look?

486.92 with 11.87 shipping coming to 498.79.
Also, should i trade out the 500 for a 720, or stick with the 550?

for the price of the 4850 1gig u can get the 512 4870 idk what the downfall would be i would think it would be faster

X model. not XT. i.e. am2+. I can't justify buying a brand new machine with am2+ as the mobo and thus ddr2. Why not just go the AM3 model? DDR3 ram is getting cheaper.. Granted the performance gain and such compared to the price isn't yet quite worth it.. But I still say go the extra.. And go the HD4850/HD4770 (HD4770 if you can find it!); til the newer cards pop up and you have more for later. My 2 cents

Go for a 4770 now, only 100 bucks, and when the time comes that you feel the games you're playing need more power, either drop another 4770 in to get 4890+ performance levels, or upgrade to the 5xxx series and ebay/forum sell your 4770 for a discount.

People will be wanting second 4770's for crossfire a lot as time goes on, I imagine the 4770 will net a decent amount of money reselling it yourself later!
