The 2G iPod Touch is due for a refresh this fall since they were launched in early fall 2008 and you know there has to be new toys every year to keep the bottom line healthy. The 3G should be out this fall. Also the Zune HD is coming out in September so that's at least another option and should provide some competition as well.

Rumors are it may have a camera and prices are likely to drop to match Zune HD pricing. So 32GB at $300 instead of $400 like now and maybe a 64GB at $400. (Numbers may be wrong I'm going purely from memory.)

I'm waiting for the next iPod Touch as well.

Rumors are saying it will have a microphone and a camera. So it's essentially an iPhone without the phone service I hope that's true because at free wifi spots you'd be able to use it as a phone with Google Voice / Grandcentral.

The zune HD looks awesome too though.

You guys know Bang and Olufson make BEOSOUND which murders any ipod by a factor of 20 for sound quality.

Lots of DAPs and media players murder the iPod in headphone output quality but people don't care enough. They'll take additional features even if it means compromising on others.

Zunes, Cowons, more recent Sony, some iRiver, some Sansas. Check out dapreview.net forums.

When I eventually get an iPod Touch, it will be for the wi-fi, touch screen and apps. I want the compact internet access much more than music as I sit or stroll around a wi-fi area.

+1.

My iRiver Clix 2 kicks the crap outta any ipod for sound output quality.

My next player will most likely be the Cowon S9 32gb. Looks awesome, and I've read nothing but positive on it, apart from a 'while-to-get-used-to' GUI.

I really really dislike ipod sound output. Not only do they lack the clarity of nicer players; they lack the actual strength at max volume. Even trying to use my Shure SE110 on my girlfriends ipod nano is shocking.. Almost no bass whatsoever, and it just sounds bad. She uses a pair of Sony MDR-EX85LPs. And it just doesnt sound right.. she's not as fussed as I am though. But she keeps trying to steal my FiiO E5 portable Amp! Lol. :P

Also its not just the 'extra features' they 'think' are there that aren't on others, its cos ipod has a name to it.. You go to a general consumer and you recommend a Cowon player to them and they'll shut you down straight away saying Ipod is better! It's kinda sad.. I'd pick a Sansa Clip over a ipod shuffle anyday of the week!

People are fooled by gimicks and what 'looks cool' when it comes to ipods.. I like apple personally; I just wish they'd put more effort into sound quality of their products. Can't even do custom equalizers on ipods.. Unless you preset every single song with specified settings.. No thanks :P
