Just curious being I have not not seen a thread in a while.... if you guys had to say for year 2009 which would be the best anti-virus (free preferably)?

I prefer Antivir; it's got a smaller footprint than the other two (Avast & AVG). Avast comes in second with AVG coming up a lap behind in the rear, for its bloat factor. Sad really; I used AVG since it came out and loved it, but ever since v.7.5 IIRC, it's been ridiculously bloated.

I use Avira and am very happy with it. I used AVG for a long time up until version 8.something. That software is so incredibly bloated you might as well run (gasp) Norton. I haven't had a virus that I knew about for years and years, but I guess it is good to keep some anti-virus program on there just in case.

I used AVG for some time, but for the last 3 years I have used Avast, and now use it in my "protection pack" after fixing up some ones computer.

So would have to say avast.

I think the best antivirus is a dual boot system. On the 'important' one, only view hella-trusted sites, don't use email, don't look at porn.

another +1 to avira, the only small thing i find is that on the rare occasion the updates download slower than usual.

AVG, use your routers firewall and disable sw firewalls, configure your router with OpenDNS and create an online account with them and configure. All you'll ever need.

Restricting what users can access on OpenDNS REALLY cuts down on risk, after all you'll never be stupid enough to get anything but the others on your home network tend to be the weakest link.

avira FTW ... since like 2000 ... I actually installed it on my work machine over the IT depts symantec crap ... he didnt like that ;]

Avira FTW! (Highest detection rate!)

Same thing here with AVG. Since 7.5 its bloat factor is HUGE.

Unless you remove the hard drive the 'important' OS is installed on, that's not gonna do much.

If you worked at my organization I'd rebuild the workstation just to teach you a lesson.... :p

I use AVG Free 8.5; it works well and I've never had a virus. Also, AVG is a smaller install than Avast and Avira; 45MB AVG, 58MB Avast, and 75MB Avira.

One senior member here tested these for definitions and the other tested them separately to see how much of a resource hog they are. Avira came out on top to beat all other freeware and almost all pay-for programs.

If things have changed since then, then dump as many virii as you can onto a test machine, image it, then test away to see if things changed so we can switch away from Avira. Otherwise, when it comes to definitions and not being a resource hog, Avira simply beats them *and* they were giving away the pro version for free last time I checked. I find the freeware version sufficient as long as you turn off the nag screen.
