Microscopes zoom in on molecules at last

http://www.newscientist.com/article/...rue&print=true

Those pictures are just beautiful

You may be thinking, big deal right? Actually, scientists have been able to look at individual atoms for over 30 years, but NEVER an intact molecule at this resolution. This is a true milestone in science.

Being able to actually see the bonds between the atoms will open so many doors. IBM hopes this will open up the area of sub nanometer transistors. (1 atom ~ 1 angstrom, 10 angstroms ~ 1 nanometer). Being able to only look at one atom at a time would have made this impossible before. Imagine 200x more transistors on a chip than what 22nm could give us.

This is also huge for any kind of chemistry and biomedical research.

Awesome! I work with high-precision chemical analytical tools, so this impresses me much.

I think this is a neat advancement in optics. And here I thought my reading glasses were strong.. Besides me making a joke. The uses for this I think are astounding.

I always found it strange that scientist could view atoms, but not molecules. Although I understand why, it still seems like someone skipped a step somewhere in their research and jumped ahead.

Wow...this is pretty awesome. I wish I had this microscope in chemistry when drawing what molecules looked like

From the way the device was explained, it sounds like you almost need to know the exact locations of the molecules to view them.

Just think... A whole cell phone that is small enough to completely replace the separate blue tooth ear piece. Featuring a separate bluetooth display for actually looking at something.

an octo-core CPU that is smaller than your fingernail. Whoops you dropped it into a shag rug, you lost a $300 CPU.
