ok im very new to overclocking.. the only thing ive ever done is my graphics card which has an app to do it so its probably nothing like cpu. my cpu runs at 2.66ghz right now, and i'd like to get it to 3.00-3.30 or just somewhat faster than it is now. so if theres anything you can tell me to introduce me to this stuff, please do! its probably not something i want to jump into too fast so what do i do? what do i need to know?

The first thing you'll probably want to do is read through the following sticky at the top of this forum...

HOWTO: Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals) - A Guide v1.7
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=515316

... then edit your post (or create a sig.) to include your complete system spec's, including a direct link to your particular RAM.

:welcome:

Here's a good sticky on C2D/C2Q Ocing.

First, you'll need some software:

CPU-Z for settings verification.
RealTemp for temp monitoring.
Orthos Stress Prime or Prime95 for CPU stressing.

Next, you'll want to set a few things manually in the BIOS before OCing.
- Set your RAM timings and voltage to their stock settings.
- Disable power saving features like SpeedStep and C1E.
- Enabling Load Line Calibration usually completely eliminates Vdroop (voltage reduction while CPU is under load).
- You'll want your CPU and RAM to run in a 1:1 ratio while OCing.

I'm not familiar with the P5Q BIOS, so I'm not sure what all the setting are called. Could you post a BIOS template before we continue?

Here's a BIOS template for the P5Q-E (just disregard the settings in the template, and replace w/ your own)...
