I want to build a new rig i got robbed an they took my nvidia dual core so now i want to do a amd quad.

My max with tax is around 700 dollars. I want to be able to do video editing with sony vegas my homework online and with office 07 all the while burning a dvd in the background. So i think quad may be in my future. I would like to OC after i break the cpu in a little.

cpu that fits in the budget an can be OC'd
Ram dont care what kind but at least 4gb
hdd at least 250gb
a decent video card i love to game anything better then my old 9600gt 512
any case
any psu that wont break in two weeks
keyboard mouse wired or not

i would like to build in a few weeks so take your time on posts, and if this is in the wrong area for new thread then can a mod please move it for me.

I don't have time to do links and such as i'm really supposed to be cleaning the house (ahh well), but i'd get this:

Corsair 400w PSU, $50 before $20 mail in rebate.
Any AM3 mobo and any ddr3-1333 7-7-7-21 ram (or 1600 8-8-8), or AM2+ and ddr2-800/1066, whichever is cheaper. If you want future proofing (as much as a computer can have, at least) go AM3/DDR3.
PhII 810 CPU, it's an excellent CPU that OCs almost as well as the more expensive ones, but is much cheaper. If you need a cheaper CPU, Athlon II X4's are decently speedy (bit behind the 810), and cost about $100.
Wait till the 22nd or a bit longer for a GPU, the ATI 5000 series comes out then which should force 4000 cards down in price. A 4650 w/GDDR3 ram (not gddr2!) should be roughly on par with an nvidia 9600. i have a 4830 and love it, it's on par with a 9800GT and generally costs less. However last time i checked $5-10 more got you a 4850, which is more like 250GT spec wise, distinctly faster!
That's almost certainly all going to change price wise after the new cards come out, so some patience is needed.
If you get a mobo with a GPU built in (any 780/790 chipset) it'll do for low end gaming till the new cards come out. 770 chipset boards tend to be cheaper though.

Case wise, i'm impressed with the gigabyte $36 special that has the slotted grill in front, i built a rig for my dad using one and liked it. Failing that, anything with free shipping :P

I have a logitech YBLA49A keyboard that i really like, and a logitech Mx510 mouse that i also really like.
For those though your best bet is to hit a few computer stores (if such things exist near you) and try 'em all out.

I have a WD 320gb 7200rpm HDD that cost me $49 shipped, which was hard to beat at the time. I'm a big WD fan, i wouldn't buy anything else unless the price difference was truly massive. It only takes one HDD failure to convince you that like PSUs, quality beats low price on HDDs.

Thanks for the ideas thus far!

Yup, that's the CPU.
I'll post links to all of it when i get a chance.

Check out the ATI section for info on the 5000 cards.

Ok here we go, $690 shipped with cali-tax. You didn't mention a monitor, so i didn't put one in.

CPU AMD 810 PhII x2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103650

Mobo Gigabyte 770 AM3: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128392

Ram, Gskill ripjaw 1333 7-7-7 1.5v: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231276

GPU Powercolor 4850 (wait for this though): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131162

HDD, WD black 640gb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136319

PSU, Corsair 400w: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139008

Case, gigabyte $36 special(another 120mm fan is a good idea for OCing): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811233035

DVD burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151187

Cheap keyboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823174004

Cheap logitech mouse: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16826104051

Note that this does not include an aftermarket CPU cooler. The OEM 810 cooler is good for 3ghz to 3.1ghz depending on your ambients, above that and you'll need something better.
If you need a monitor you can go with an Athlon II x4 and an AM2+/ddr2 mobo and save $60-70, go with a cheaper HDD and save $20 (320gb or so), and use a 785g chipset mobo with built in graphics to save $70 or so. Course it won't game that well at high res.

The 5000 series cards are going to be quite non-cheap, but they will force the 4890 down in price, which should force the 4870 down in price, which should force the 4850 down in price, which will hopefully force the 4830 down in price, and so on and so forth.
We'll find out by october where the prices will be roughly speaking. At launch i don't expect any 4000 price changes, but they should start going down within a week. At least i hope so.
If you want to build soon using a mobo with integrated graphics is the way to go, then save the GPU money for a month or two later.

whoa thanks

That ram is crazy cool looking. The ram i was looking at the other day was
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231166

and that video card was the same maker as the one i was looking at which one would be better?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131155

yeah mouse/keyboard not worried bout that always seem to find good deals. Since i get tired of keyboards a lot.

And the cpu cooler i was looking at the cooling section and thought this one would be a wise choice.

If you go with DDR2 and an AM2+ motherboard, the ram you linked is a good choice.
It won't work on an AM3 mobo though, they require DDR3.

That is an excellent cooler, i have one and love it.

The video card you linked is roughly the same performance as a 4830, and can be overclocked to stock 4850 levels (of course, you can OC 4850's too). It's big plus is that it uses a bit less then half the power a 4830 or 4850 uses.
Either way, all the current GPU prices should go down shortly.

in theory would a mobo that took am2 and am3 be able to handle both kinds of ram ddr2 an ddr3?

This is all great information and it seems like if i wait for the right moment i wont cripple my pocket to badly.

I am currently not worried about a monitor cause i have been given so many in the past. I am still a fan of giant CRT because i have not found a flat screen i liked yet and i have used a lot of them.

how bout this for the ram $139 seems like a lot

Most crt users like the lcd known as the Samsung 2233RZ cuz its got 120hz refresh like crts. Just mentioning it, even though its outta of your range and maybe a future upgrade.

Am2/am2+/am3 mobos are actually AM2+, they shouldn't be listing AM3 as they aren't AM3, they support AM3 cpus because the cpus (not the mobo) have both a DDR3 and a DDR2 memory controller and are built to work in AM2+ and AM3 sockets.
A genuine AM3 motherboard only works with AM3 cpus and DDR3 memory.

The difference between that memory and the stuff i linked is the timings, 7-7-7 on what i linked vs 9-9-9 on the one you linked. What they mean is that for a standard read operation, the ram takes X clock cycles (7, or 9, in this case). The other two numbers are two other basic commands, and the third one is typically just the first three added together, though it does have a separate meaning.
The 1333 or 1066 or 1600 or whatever number is the frequency, it essentially sets the amount of data you can get in or out of the ram in X period of time.
The timings are how quickly that data starts coming, the responsiveness if you will.

yeah i know a little about timings and low latency is good. My old pc6400 was 5-5-5 thanks for the 411. 7 beats 9

Wow that is a nice monitor i saw a 20in samsung with the game left 4 dead playing an was blown away. I didn't know that the contrast thing and the hertz were so important. LCD;s have came along way in price too. I bought a 19in in 2006 for 219 total. Now the same monitor is about 129 + tax. If i wait maybe a 22in is in my future. I see CRTS for free all the time and as of now i have a 17in waiting at a friends house. Just dont know if it works its been there for sometime.
