9600GSO 768 fan speed won't hold @ 100%

Ok this isn't the first thread on this subject by me, but it is making it almost impossible to run GPU2 FAH on this card. I have a second card in a sealed box that won't see the light of day in my house unless I can solve this annoying issue.

It's a PNY VCG96GSO7XEB card and it's thwarted all attempts to hold the fan at 100% which is a necessity if I want to run GPU2 FAH on it even at stock speeds. The latest nVidia 190.38 driver won't do it, Win7 won't do it and Rivatuner 1.24c and some other OC apps won't hold the fan speed on a manually set speed. It always reverts to auto even if all the right boxes are checked for 100% low level manual control.

Is this a firmware/bios issue that overrides all software input?
Software alone doesn't seem to be able to wrest control for more than a few seconds. Is there a good flashing utility that I can see what the bios settings are and perhaps change the correct value to unlock the fan speed control I need.

My EVGA 9800GTX+ has no issues holding whatever speed I set it to

I've found that GPU2 WUs will error out much above 70°C while nVidia thinks that 80°+ is just peachy for gaming

The original 9800GTX had that issue too. If it went below 60c, it reverted back to Auto fan settings. It is an issue with the firmware on the video card and nVidia refuses to fix it.

I have the same issue with ASUS 9600GSO. The only way I can change the fan setting and OC (RT or Evga Precision won't work regardless of driver) is to use ASUS SmartDoctor.

Does PNY have their own utility that came with the disk?

Anyone successfully edit the firmware in the bios with an editor to lock it to minimum clocks and fan speeds?

From my research I did long ago when the 9800GTX first came out, there is no real way to change it unless you fix the bug directly or remove the "auto" feature all together.

AKA: It is much easier for me to put an aftermarket cooler on the card; which I did.

Really sorry I can't be of much help other than the "been there, done that" comments.

In my experimentation on a number of cards, though admittedly not a 9600 GSO, 85% was the fan sweet spot. Running at 100% made an average of a 2 degree difference while producing a lot more noise. Will it hold something less than 100%. Have you tried the driver level fan settings as opposed to the low level fan settings?

It won't hold any value I set in EVGA precision or RivaTuner

I wish I'd spent the bux on one 9800 GTX+ card instead of two GSOs

I couldn't even run it. It said I was missing a DLL file.

I guess I'm in the same boat as you.

88C at load.

I don't have a ASUS 9600 GSO. I do have an EVGA 9600 GSO and BFG 8800 GS (same card other than manufacturer). Neither has had any problem running 85% with driver level direct control. I've never had to mess with the low level control.

I have 5xPNY768GSO. Using Rivatuner 2.24C, 190.38, only one is holding fan setting set 85%. Three are clocked 555-1781-798 and two are 555-1838-798. Most of my rigs are caseless, including these PNY cards, allowing me to place extra fans where needed. Four PNY cards are on a P6N Diamond with a 120mm on top blowing down and another 120mm blowing into the video connectors (0=71c/1=76c/2=69c/3=60c). The other card is a single with a 120mm blowing into the stock cooler intake (0=57c). The 4-card setup has completed 493 WU with only 4 failed (3 of the failures are on the hottest GPU). The single card has completed 71 WU with zero failed. The PNY cards are making ~4500ppd on 353/787 pointers and ~3800ppd on 478/1888 pointers.

Edit
I have 5xEVGA768/384GSO which have no issue holding fan settings.

I don't know if it would help or hurt, but I know it was done with the old 6200 cards. Have you tried flashing the card BIOS to one from another manufacturer? I do know some people had flashed the old 6200's with 6800 BIOS to get them to OC. I don't know if this would damage the card though. Maybe a BIOS from eVGA or BFG for the 9600GSO might do the trick? I wouldn't think it could hurt the card, but I could be wrong.

You could edit the bios so that the fan ramps up faster. I've done that with great success on a couple of cards.

After trying for a week or so, I give up on figuring out how I can get my Asus 9600GSO to run any cooler. It runs between 77C ~ 88C when Folding and that's just a little too hot. As soon as I'm able, I'm ordering a Zalman VF900.

None of my nvidia cards will hold fan settings.

Maybe it's Vista or Win7? Or being 64-bit?

I have a pair of 9800GTs, one of which loses it's Direct Control setting when the machine reboots. I have just been manually resetting it(PITA) but am wondering if I should reinstall the drivers and see if that corrects the problem. It's always the same card, the one on Default Monitor. Hmmm, just thinking out loud (can you really do that with a keyboard?) maybe I'll swap them between the PCIE slots...

I've got several Win XP multiple GPU rigs with a single monitor attached. One card or the other loses its overclock on reboot. Rarely do they lose the fan setting.

I just thought of something- I'm not sure but I think my dual GPU XP rig doesn't have a dummy plug on ithe second card; I wonder if that matters. I'm at work right now, but I'll check when I get home tonight.

I don't think he's talking about reboots. I can set my fan to 50% and it'll stick for a few seconds, then go back to about 40% on auto. All of mine are connected to monitors. All of mine are Vista+ and 64-bit too. I wonder if XP and / or 32-bit people don't have this problem. Or if there is anybody with Vista that doesn't have it..

I only run XP and XP x64 and don't have a fan control problem. Rigs without dummies or monitors on the 2nd card lose their RT overclock on one card or the other on reboot.
