Compter won't power on

I just got a new 750W PC Power & Cooling PSU for about $20. I go home to install the thing on my ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 mobo, press power, and then nothing .

The mobo is getting power, as when I flip the switch on the PSU I can see light toggling on and off from the onboard power buttons. I think the obvious test is to unplug the thing and pop the old PSU back in to see if I fried the mobo somehow, but it's too late at night for that right now.

Does anybody have any other guidelines that I should follow, such as places to start, things to test, etc?

Thanks a bunch guys.

firstly i would say unplug everyuthing except for the two power cables that go to the motherboared

then you need to make sure nothing is shorting out the motherboard, EG- the back of the motherboard accidently touching the backplake

is the motherboard damaged anywhere?

try jump starting the psu, by useing a paper clip or wure, to connect the green wire to any black fore on the 34 pin mobo connector, this will test the psu.
here is a guide

( its perfectly safe)

Hey - thanks for that tip antipesto. I've never heard of jump starting a PSU before.

I tried it on my old PSU, and it started up perfectly. I then unplugged my new one and performed the same technique, and it was unable to start! Does this indicate a faulty PSU? I'm just a little curious as it seems odd that it would provide power to the board (with the onboard power switch lighting up) when the PSU is switched on in the back, yet unable to fully start?

I suppose I will just return to Microcenter tomorrow and exchange it for a new one, which hopefully be the end of it. You may have just saved me a whole bunch of troubleshooting and stress! Thanks!

yup must be the psu, if it is all plugged in, switeched on from the back and still dosent start then its definatly faulty, the lights could be being powerd from a different connector possibly?

And even if the psu is faulty PC P&C should cover it under warranty.

I just had a friend have the same problem, he had a shorted fan cable. Would show status on the board but nothing at power on, all good units have short protection which prevent them from frying your junk.

i had that one on a m8''s computer, took hours trying to figure why the psu wasnt power up, wouldnt even ' jump start' so it wasnt the motherboard, turned out it was the fan controller shorting out the molex......

or i have known the case to short out the psu before when a wire on the + rail of the psu touches the case
