Some time back I picked up a cheap Zotac NF610I-D-E itx board (Deactivated Item on newegg now) it only has a pci-e 1x slot and a GeForce 7050 on board gpu. I don’t think that will cut it for he games I want to play (starcraft 1 and 2 when it comes out, ect) i want to run a older 8800gtx or ulta card because there priced to sell now and not to bad of a bang for the buck. When trying to find a solution I found this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230378344436&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
"Make your pci-e x16 video card (or ethernet card ` sound card etc.... )can use on the pci-e x1 slot!!"

now for my question will a 8800gtx/ultra card running in a pci-e 1 x slot be a better performer then the geforce 7050 that onboard and justify the cost (max res will be 1024x768) ??

It'll be a good bit better, especially if it's a PCIe 2.0 slot.

The mod is easy, just cut the back out of the 1x slot. Assuming, at least, that there aren't any componants in the way on the mobo.

For $35 don't even bother with that ebay thing. Looking at the layout of your board, I doubt a card would even fit, especially if you have the mobo in a case. Better off getting an el-cheapo AMD board and processor, you can get a combo that'll run rings around your current setup for around $100.

And what if the mobo just doesnt support that many lanes?

Huh? It's a PCIe x1 slot. Cutting the back end out to accept a physically larger card doesn't change that. It'll run at x1.

edit: I suppose I should elaborate. Part of the PCIe standard is that cards are able to negotiate the available lanes and run themselves at that speed. As long as it's an open ended slot or you cut away the back side, you can run a x16 card in a x1/4/8 slot, it'll just run a bit slower depending how much bandwidth it needs.
