HD 5870 CF - X58 vs P55 platform comparison

I think the time has come to strectch the X 8 PCIe lanes and see how it does against dual X 16 lanes.

For this comparison I will use two HD 5870's .... run it on a i7-920 X58 platform and then compare that to a i5-750 P55 platform.

P 55 System :

Motherboard : Asus P7P55D Pro

GPU's : 2 x BFG GTX 285 OC - SLI // 2 x XFX HD5870 CrossFire

RAM : G.Skill 2 x 2gb DDR3-1600 7-8-7-20

HDD : Western Digital Raptor 74gb

OS : Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Cooling : TRUE 120

PSU : NorthQ 850W

X 58 System :

Motherboard : Asrock X58 Extreme

GPU's : 2 x BFG GTX 285 OC - SLI // 2 x XFX HD5870 CrossFire

RAM : G.Skill 2 x 2gb DDR3-1600 7-8-7-20

HDD : Western Digital Raptor 74gb

OS : Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Cooling : Zalman CNPS Extreme

PSU : Mushkin 850W

Brolloks, i dunno if you would be willing to do 1 on a P35 single and CF setup? Not something as detailed as your usual reviews but just want to know if a p35 can keep up with a single 5870 card... CF probably not.

P35 is as scarse as hen's teeth these days, will see what I can find.
The 5870 CF will just kill two X 4 lanes, no sense in doing that.

As single 5870 should run fine on P35. If you can find anything showing a 4870X2 running on P35 that should give you a good idea of what to expect.

P35 is PCIe1.1 x16/x4 all the time. 1 card should be fine, but a 2nd card would be severely choked.

Can't wait to see your next review, bro! I remember the 3870X2 quad-fire review and the driver hunt.

I wonder if it would be a more fair battle if you were to disable the i7's hyperthreading and run the cpu's at the same clock speed. I know it may not make much of a difference, but it interests me.

My order for the 5870's have been delayed, in the meantime I will run a set of gaming and synthetic bechmarks with two GTX 285 OC in SLI on the P55 board and then on a X58 board.

Once I get the two 5870's I will re-run to test the CF setups.

This should show a negligable difference as the other similar tests showed yes? Only the GTX295/HD4870x2 cards are going to saturate the PCIe2.0 x8 bandwidth...

Dont get me wrong, carry on and all, but there are reviews out there already (though not with the 5870) showing this.

Better to have a review show for sure there is no bottlenecking them assume that just because the last gen cards don't, that the new gen cards won't as well.

Agreed, like I said do it. But if its slower than the GTX295 and Hd4870x2 and those dont saturate the bandwidth, why would 5870?

Keep dreaming about it being slower then HD 4870x2 and GTX295 in EVERY SINGLE test
