I just got this game from a friend with all the expansion packs, Warlords, Beyond the Sword, and a mod which is supposed to be fairly popular called Realism. Which version would you recommend to play?

I haven't played any beyond the stock game no expansions. I enjoyed it quite a bit though, personally i'd start there and then do expansions if you get bored.

I agree. Just started playing myself. That's what I'm doing.

The expansions really just add a lot of factions, leaders, units, and such as well as re-balancing older units, civics, leadership traits, etc. Personally, I would recommend installing both expansions before playing. It won't take anything away from the base game and it will give you more options.

I haven't ever used the Realism mod so I can't comment on that.

But which expansion is better to play? It's like each is an independent game to load, would Warlords or Beyond the Sword be better?

play beyond the sword. Load 'nextworld' I believe it's called. Make sure you play the full game as a random civ game. Once you get future tech it lets you make mechwarriors.

Really the idea in civ 4 is pretty centrally the same. You pick a civ, you grow it, and try to expand.

There are scenarios, new units, etc, but essentially, get bigger, keep people happy/quiet, keep getting bigger, make money, conquer this guy, trade with that guy, spread your religion into this guy, steal some tech from that guy, then decide he's a threat, ask guy 1 and 2 to help you bomb him so you do then guy 5 makes an alliance with guy 2 behind your back you lose your trade for fur and incense with them, they pop submarines up on your coast while you make a frantic attack to nuke them while they unload marines under your nose, capture your capital city, rename it something stupid and steal your almost-completed world wonder making you curse and try to find the save game before they did that.

Beyond the Sword added "quest" that were fan at times and random events.

Total Realism is great but the game time is always the longest setting I think it's epic. So you have a long time between tech, longer production ext ext. but the units and religion changes are great.

They are independent games but if you install Warlords and BtS, BtS will have everything Warlords added. So really, just play BtS.

There are also some amazing mods out there that add even more depth to the game. Just google Civlization 4 mods, you will find a mod forum/website.

Cool stuff, makes me want to play the game again.

I played the stock version forever, and still do. But I've heard the expansions really add a lot to the game. So I say just dive in... not sure about mods though.

Yeah, there is no reason to just install one.

Install Civ 4
Install Warlords
Install Beyond the Sword
Install latest Beyond the Sword patch
Play! (by launching Beyond the Sword and you will have everything available to you)

While you've been debating about expansions I just finished building stonehenge! (I really wish I remembered how to play this game... but I haven't played since Civilization 1... that was quite a while ago.)

More like:
Install Civ 4
Install Beyond the Sword
Install latest Beyond the Sword patch

Since BtS has Warlords content except for the Warlords scenarios. Not really a loss by any means.

Good mods that don't really change the base game too much are
BetterAI (self-exploratory)
BUG (adds a ton of interface improvements)

I just finished a few run throughs of the basic game, playing through Warlords now and will try out BtS next.

I am not that good at it though. I play at noble level, and still finish with a Dan Quayle/ Warren Harding score everytime lol.

For anybody looking to get into (or back into) Civ 4, there are some good guides here:

I really can't say enough about this game, it has been one of my favorites over the past several years. I love it!

Well I've been reinspired to purchase this game from D2D for $5.

I'm hoping I can actually play through it this time and enjoy it.

The beginning freaks me out because there's a lot to take in and learn up front.

Yeah, it can take a while to get into it. It wouldn't hurt to turn the difficulty level down, turn barbarians off, even turn war off if you want and focus on learning how to keep your cities growing, profitable, productive, and healthy. If your city is having problems, double-click on it to zoom in and find out what is going on, then you can learn how to prevent or fix it in the future.

That's definitely a good idea that I will be utilizing

What would you say the total amount of hours is in gameplay?

Depends on the speed you set marathon is 20+ hours in one run through.
Build your society based on your strengths (IE leadership bonuses) and don't go overboard on expansion early on (keep it under 10 cities for a while).

Pound out culture in your border towns to try and peacefully conquer nearby civs.
