My Windows 7 Premium Home will be here tomorrow and I need to format my 640GB WD Black drive.

I was going to partition part of it for the OS and the rest for other programs.

How much space should I leave for Windows?

Thanks

Windows 7 folder itself is 8-9 GB.
A few GB for other basic stuff gets you under 15 GB.
Double that to 30 GB as maybe the minimum assuming no large programs will be installed on C:\ drive, or C:\Program Files.

So it depends on what your strategy is. I install smaller apps to C:\Program Files but anything bigger, for me goes to a Program Files folder on another partition.

Yeah I would rather have the OS isolated incase I need to format.

So I think I will make the OS portion 100GB leaving 540GB free.

Onefstsnake,

If you just want to have one partition for the Windows 7 operating system itself and then a separate partition for the programs and documents it would probably be best to allocate between 20GB and 30GB for Win 7.

Also, if you have any trouble with Windows 7 Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams.
