For benching I think I'd go with 2gb or 4gb assuming it's DDR2. If you're running DDR3, then I'd use 3gb.

You can have DDR3 in dual channel, single channel, or tri-channel. DDR2 can be single channel or dual channel. That's why he corrected you.

The new i5 systems are DDR3 and can't even do tri-channel, only dual channel at the most.

I didn't know DDR3 could be run dual channel, but the only way I know of running DDR2 in single channel is to run mismatched size sticks, or put them in the wrong slots.

Sorry, I should have been more specific..
The question was pertaining to my i7 board.
So 3gb would be the better..

Less dense 1GB sticks can usually overclock further on the same given voltage than their denser 2GB counterparts. At least that's how it was with DDR2. I haven't seen (or looked for) enough comparisons between the two to say it applies to DDR3, but it still seems to be a reasonable premise.

+1

I reserve the right to completely reverse my position when forum wars comes around. For forum wars, you want to run 3x4G sticks for maximum overclocking stability!

I think I read that Vista 32 bit benched better overall in comparison tests(7 wasn't tested in the comparison). So that's kinda why I asking.
Maybe I'll pick up some 3gb HyperX and check it out.

Did a install of 32 bit vista with 3x1 gig of Kingston this weekend.
3dmark2k6's score was lower with the 32bit at the same mhz.

64 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=12405591
I did use different drivers accidentally. Maybe that's the difference?
On spi 32m the same.
64 with 6gig of ram scored better at a lower speed.

If you want to reach maximum when benching, you should disable memory remapping while doing it (if possible). That takes a bit.
